| SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1921 TURNING THE SPOTLIGHT BY CHARLE @ long time to discover our really fine actors unless they do something spectacular to at- ‘Wract attention, such as “Dr. Jekyll an Mr. Hyde" or a very bad Brutus. The Main Street mind that runs through the theatre isn't satisfied with anything but a “show” on the “for: corners" of its limited imagina- tion. In other words, a great many people have no appreciation of in- telligent acting. Accordingly, the in- qelligent actor has many obstacles to overcome. ‘The particular actor I have in mind Lionel Barrymore, who puts the meat of this argument into “The Claw.” Back of everything he does 4m Henri Bernstein's old-fashioned, un- Sympathetic play there 1s brain-power, Rot merely acting-power. The char- acter, with its French politics and its French sentimentality, may be re- mote to you, yet the actor forces him- self on you as a human being. Here ts acting that challenges Coquelin’ for it is based on the same ground and the same understanding, and never does it yield so much as an inch. Barrymore could play Cortelon in Paris without the slightest fear of be- ing misunderstood, no matter what language he might speak, for he Is the Frenchman body and soul. Having lived in Paris he of course knows the French. But this {s only a means to an end. The important part of it ts that Lionel Barrymore puts his brain well us his heart and soul into his Ing. With him sense of character tho true test of acting—comes first, nd in this senso he never fails. He was equally true to type as Milt Shahkks in “The Copperhead.” His Macbeth was made unbelievable only by ridiculous surroundings. Nothing ean alter the fact that he {s an un- eommonly real actor. He lives just around the corner from Greatness. Stupidity a Safeguard. Against a possible censorship of the stage there is the safeguard of @tup‘dity that marks plays designed to be sensational, Yet this regulation may be applied to plays just as it now is supposed to control movies. Certainly the stage is fast and loose, wut give it enough rope and !t will “pubtlers hang itself. The license is to be remarked not only in word but in dress. No one seems to mind the fact that any ‘mumber of music shows are noturi- ous for their half-naked women, ‘These shameless exhibitions have also become common to plays so destitute of cleverness that they depend upon Physica! exposure to attract the wit- less sightseers. This week has brought another reminder of the tra fic. You may tmagine the police have Gone nothing to prevent such display. But you are wrong. They did some- thing along this line a short time ago when « man without a shirt and a Woman with only a few beads for covering uppeared in a dance, They fompelied the man to wear a shirt! This may give you the police point of view. Apparently it never occurs to theatrical managers, when they Meet in solemn conclave, to consider matiers of this sort. They discuss Fallroad rates, salaries of actors and other things touching their pocket- books, but they never talk about the slimy trail of indecency on the stage that stretches to greater lengths year by year. Two Flappers. ‘Two of the current plays offer in- teresting studies of girls. In “Am- bush,” ithe wild, pleasure-seeking daughter of a Jersey City clerk bringy fuin on her father. In “A Bill of Di About Plays and Players By BIDE | DUDLEY HERE re people tn the world belief that theatre ticket brok- ers and box office men are rough, hard characters who would step on a lame bug just to hear him pop. They aren't at all, In fact usually just the other way. Yesterday we ran across Leonard Bergman, Louis Cohn, Joe Leblang and Frank Meyers on 42d Street “Speed up, boys, we'll have to hurry of we're going to see that pic- ture show,” said Leonard Laughing and talking they went round the corner and entered a mal! film theatre. Three-quarters of an hour later they came out. “Come on,” sald Louls Cohn. “Let's get some ice cream soda.” they're “I guess I'l) take peanuts to-day,” | ON S DARNTON vorcement,' howeve! of @ man who is supposed | “cured” of insanity foregoes marriage to stand by her father when his di- vorced wife goes away to marry Rebbe Both types are uncommonly w acted, Florence Eldredge, who cam* to the Garrick from an up-State stock company, ts thoroughly alive and real as the girl in “Ambush.” Althoug» | Katharine Cornell fe an Amertcan shy | seems as English as the play in “A Rill of Divorcement.” Here are two fappers worth more than passing notice.
