Members of the Art Students’ League were indignant to-day over the action of the police in “ruining” Wheir masquerade ball at the Hotel McAlpin last night. The police att)- Qude was that if any one was to Blame it was the overenthus‘astic Press agent who created the impres- sion that it was going to be a peppy affair. Photographs of “the veiled girl" who was to be present were sent to the newspapers. It was not a girl ut a man impersonating one. But Police Headquarters received oupies of the picture and refused a permit for the bal! The programme started yesterday afterhoon with playlets. These ended | about 10 o'clock. There were 500 per- sons ready then for the ball, But Po- lice Captain Joseph A. Howard, act- {ng on orders from Inspector Boettler, anounced that there would be no @ancing in costume. Others w free to dance all they wanted to, bul two detectives at ‘the door turned back everybody in costume It was the league's first big party since 1917, and there was a great hubbub. But it ended by those who insisted on dancing getting back invo Street clothes. Many returned humo.
