Outgoing P. S. Commission Orders Interborough to Correct the Evil. ‘A special form of order consolidat- ing all previous orders issued in two years past was sent by the Public Service Commission to the Interbor- ough Rapid Transit Company as an eleventh hour move to give the in- coming commission a fresh tart. The order is a result of a veries of | conferences between Deputy Public Bervice Commissioner Charles Vv. Halley jr. and representatives of Mr. Hediey for the Interborough. The order was in the form of a letter, although Mr. Hatley had prepared an oficial document, which Commis- sioner Barrett thought unnecessary and to whose decision Deputy Com-/ missioner Halley wrote a dissenting) Memorandum. The order shows that the Seventh | Avenue and the Lexington Avenue subway trains are carrying In the Push hours aa many as 143 standees car. The letter drawing this oon- ition to the traction company's at- | tention states that immediate steps @hould be taken to reduce the stand- loads to a minimum. based on observations made by transit inspectors on the Lexington Avenue route show that in the evening northbound rush hour On six ten-car trains, with 3,000 seats, there were actually 11,580 passengers, or 143 standees in each car, On the Broadway-Seventh Avenue division, on nine trains of ten cars each, with 4,500 seats, there were 14,180 pas- sengers, or 108 standees per car. Deputy Commissioner Halley de- nied to-day the rumors of friction between himself and Commissioner Barrett as to the attitude toward the Interborough Company, and he added: “In justice to our successors and to | the public, 1 dont think this com- miasion should leave the service on ‘the Interborough to the tender mer- cies of the company, which, I might add, in all fairness, has gradually in- creased its schedules over two years without a formal order from this commission, But so that all such accomplishments might he held fast and safe, and further to give the in- coming commission an up-to-date echedule, I thought a formal order was imperative at this time so that the new commission would have something ovher than the good will of the Interborough to go by.” —$_<—————— New Bedford Mill to Reopen After Six Idle Months.
