THE NEW PLAYS “Blue Eyes” Lew Fields With Girls Even in these hard times it's re- markable how far money can go. Six dollars lasted tim nearly 12 o'clock last night at the Casino, where "Blue Eyes” had for partners good old Lew Fields and that blithesome young creature, Molly King. Mr. Fields stuffed the six in his pocket just as the tired business man across the aisle from me was falling asleép. He dozed off just in time to mjas hearing a Great Neck personage ask “How do you like my country cei@ishment?” This bit of uncon- seivus humor was provided by those brilliant authors, Leon Gordon and Le Roy Clemens. Lyrics by Z. Myers ancluded that new idea, “You're So Beautiful,” and there were lively familar tunes by T. B. Kornblum. The beautiful one, it seemed, had hit a poor artist with her automobile, and so he loved her. Losing $6 meant nothing to his life when he could win Dorothy, the beautiful step-daughter of the Great Neck possessor of an “establishment.” Bobbed-hair chorus girls added to the charm of this simple romance. Some of them wore trousers of Turk ish cut, but there were two damscls who danced about in bathing suits that left very little to the imagination, Life on Long Island is like that, you know—clothes really don't matter. In a desperate atvempt to keep up with the free-and-easy style of the place, Mr. Fields was in “full evening dress.” with the trifling exception of a collar. He was always hard at work, doing one thing or another, and just before midnight he was so tired that he curled up on a sofa. His chief specialty a clay modelling stunt, with a Steinberg as his sub- ject. Philip White offered great pos- sibilities of art In the rough—that is, rough stuff, but funny, Mr. Fields also danced like a youngster and made a gencrally gay night of it, It was Lew Fields and girls that made “Blue Ey entertaining, Mollie King, with an Irish twinkle in her eye, ‘a pleasing voice and graceful feet, hac much the same charm t¢ Many Emotions Stirred by New Opera, ‘Edipo Re’ From the Greek—via Chicago— comes the story” of Leoncavallo's “Edipo Re," which was brought to local operatic light last night at the Manhattan. Mary Garden's company perforined the fearsome tragedy of the King who siew his father and married his mother. Piven a sophisti- cated American audience had to take it with a grain of Attic salt—and even so it was not always a palatable theme for gpera, Leoncavailo, composer of “Zaza” and “Pagliacci,” left this last of his works behind him when he died not so long ago, It was written as a spe- cial tribute to his friend, Titta Ruffo, the Chicago Company's baritone, who last night, of course, sang the title role, It is in one act, the curtain aside for only fifty-seven minutes in all. But in spite of a conscious effort toward the direetness and dignity of the Greek drama of horror and irrev- ccable fate, the music stirps up some- thing like fifty-seven varities of emo- tion. Stern choruses begin tt and in- tersperse jt, but every now and then a light, melodic straip proves itself a throwback to “Pagliacci.” The lyric Leoncavailo is gone; but when Oedi- pus and Jocasta retire behind the scenes, she to strangle herself to death, he to burn his eyes out, the or- chestra Jaunches into something like a midsummer pastoral, it is so peaceful and pretty. Ite qlimaxes may fal, but there is plenty of tympanic eruption and excitement, Titta Ruffo had to sing almost every moment of fifty-seven. He sang lus- tily, broadly. He was: grand of man- ner, and wrung from the role every Possible note and gesture. His moth- erly wife was Dorothy Francis, whose IN THE REALM OF: MUSIC Jocasta may not have looked her years, but wio had some of the graces and much of the voice of a Mary Garden, ‘The rest of the cast included Albert Paillard, Teofilo Dentale, De- sire Defrere and Ladovico Oliviery, The Theban sandsstone bulk of scenery was effectively massive. The Leoncavallo novelty was fol- lowed by @ “Danse Macabre" ballet, executed by Pavloy and Oukrainsky to the music of Saint-Saens, and then by the familiar “Dance of the Houris” trom “La Gioconda.” The Eishuco ‘Trio, that musicianly and bighly artistic league whiob con- sists of Ellas Breeskin, violin; Willem Willeke, cello, and Aurelto Glorni, pi- ano, gave its seoond concert of the @enson at Aeolian Hall last night. Two of the three numbers on the pro- gramme were trios of dignified stand- ing—the Brahms in C major, op, 87, and the Beethoven in B flat, op. 1-- Strauss sonata for violoncello and piano. This early work of the modern master was included by request; it was always a popular one in concerts before the war laid its interdict on Strauss. It was heartily received by the audience, as were the other num- bers too, The National Symphony Orchestra gave the second of its week's achedule of four concerts last evening in Car- negie Hall. The Brahms piano con- certo in D minot, with Arthur Rubin- stein as soloist, proved a fine adver- tisement for this excellent planist. ‘The audience approved especially his readings of the adagio and rondo movements. Ernest Bloch's Hebrew Rhapsody fer cello and orchestra brought for- ward the orchestra's first cello player, Cornelius Van Vilet. The composition has been heard here be- fore, and is highly commended by those whose emotions are stirred by Mr. Bloch’s inspirations, After Con- ductor Mengetberg had indicated that the composer was present, the au-| dience insisted upon his recognizing! their approbation. He did it grace- fully and in silence. Other numbers Overture and the Bizet L’Arlesienne suite, ~which the orchestra treated roughly. COLUMBIA BURLESQUE GOOD AS HIGH CLASS MUSICAL COMEDY McCoy used to give to musical With no apparent effort she managed to be captivating, though her “imitations” come at too late an hour to warrant honorable Andrew Tombes strumied obviously to be arhusing.
