A “demonstration” strike, affecting between 35.000 and 40,000 workers on women's waists and dresses, went into effect at 10 o’clovk this morning throughoyt Greater New York by = order of the Joint Board of the Waist “and Dress Makers’ Union and the General Board of the International Ladies’ and Garment Workers’ Union, strike, according to Luigi Anto- nifii, Vice Chairman of the Joint Board, is to last at least three days, during which complete unionization of the trade affected is expected to be made. Acting in accordance with the mant- festo of the boards, the workers “quietly and in an onierly manner” left their shops, carrying their scissors certain designated meeting places. Assembled there, they were ad- Gressed by the speakers who urged them to complete the untonization of the trade by including ell workers in ‘ununionized shops. Mr. Antonini said the walkout af- fected about 1,500 shops in Manhattan, incliding open or ununionized shops, end about 2,100 in all the boroughs. Many of the 600 open shops already hhawe agreed to union terms. Included among the striking unions sre those of cutters, waistmakers, @ressmakers, buttonhole makers, em- broiderers and pressers.
