~ COURT OF INQUIRY TOSTTONSHOOTING OF NAVAL OFFICER Seniry Challenged, but Auto Went On and He Opened Fire. WASHINGTON, Jan. 31.—A Naval Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the shooting of Lieut. Taylor, Naval Medical Officer, at the operating base, Hampton Roads, Va., by a sentry last night. Meantime SGecretary Daniels has asked the Commandant for fuller reports, the only one received stating that the officer had been shot after hho had falled to halt when challenged by the sentry. (Special to The Evening World.) NORFOLK, Va., Jan, 31.—An in- ‘vestigation 1s under way here to-day Into the killing last night of Licut, C. &. Taylor of the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, as he was driv- merely ing an automobile inside the naval dase reservation, accompanied by a ‘woman. A sentry saw a closed car passing along one of the driveways, He called to the driver to “Halt.” The auto- mobile kept on going and the sentry fired. He heand a woman scream and the car stopped abruptly.- He opened the door and found Lieut. Taylor dead from a bullet through his head. In the opinion of naval officers, Lieut. Taylor did not hear the com- mind to halt. His motor was run- ning and the car was a tightly closed coupe, Sentries, tt {s explained, are under strict orders to call a halt twice and ahen fire, It is be ved the sentry did this, as he claims, and that he will not be held for anything more than an explanation of the fatality, as he was apparently following out orders, An autopsy ordered by showed Lieut. Taylor was shot in the right temple. As the bullet tore through the front of the machine, in- vestigators believe that Lieut. Tay- lor was looking out of the side of the car when shot. Had he been looking straight ahead it is likely he would have seen his challenger. Until the examination is completed, Capt. Price declines to make any comment. Lieut. waa twenty-eight came from Greens- boro, N, C4 but his parents are sald to live in Connecticut or Pennsy! vania. apt.
