—— —— ae Saige * NewIrish Tenor, = Tom Burke, Sings At Hippodrome By Sylvester Rawling. OM BURKE, an Irish tenor who | "rot Max mB) Berlin at Age of 83. has won favor in opera at Covent Garden and tn concerts @broad, was introduced by Father Dufty at the Hippodrome last night @s “a good fellow.” A large and friendly audience greeted him warm- ly. Anticipation was keen. It had been whispered that his volee was Phenomenal, and that he was the equal of John MeCormack as a singer of Irish ballads. Too much heralding is Gangerous, There was disappoint- ment because not all that was ex- pected was realized. Nevertheless, Mr. Burke his a voice of quality that has been well trained. ‘8 Prayer.” Despite his seem~- ing assurance he was nervous and his delivery of it was ineffective. When he came to his Irish songs, though one missed the brogue and the blarney in the “Next Market Day” and the “Ballynure Ballad,” he ‘was more at ease and sang with charm. But it was in one of the added numbers’ that he was at his inging of the “Donna ¢ mobile,” in voice and in expression, ‘was « treat, Frank St. Leger was Mr. Burke's accompanist at the piano, and assist- ing him were Helen Scholder, ‘cellist, and Francesco Longo, pianist. Leo Ornstein, pianist, and Helen Yorke, coloratura soprano, were soloists with Modest Altschuler's Russian Symphony Orchestra, at the Lexington Theatre, last night. Mr. ‘Ornstein played eli's con- certo in D minor with no little ap- Preciation, embellished, of course, with some Of his own mannerisms. He added a Liszt rhapsody in re- sponse to the insistent applause. Miss Yorke eang the ‘Caro Nome” aria from “Rigoletto,” and added Strauss's “La Primavira” waltz, The orchestral numbers, which were all Russian, in- cluded Tchaikovsky's “Marche Min- iature.” Altschuler’s “Soldiers’ Song” and Rubinstein'’s “Trepak.” There was a large and enthusiastic audience. Three new violinists were intro- duced this week end, all at Carnegie Hall. Yesterday afternoon Mishet Piastro, an Auer pupil who has had experience abroad, assisted by Josef Ader at the piano, played Car! Gold- mark's concerto, opus 28; Handel's sonata in E major and a group of smaller compositions. Hia playing was marked by virility and sound musical feeling, His tone ts big, though Inclined to roughness, He made a distinctly favorable im- pression. In the evening, at the aame hall, Mischa Viotes!. also assisted by t_the piano, played the Oscar Mammarstela’s ot NHATTAN GRAND “OPERA vere House Krenings at 8.15. t, Mat, Stohenpela” Rat “Popular Prices, 800 to $2.50, ones AS Thareday, Oct, 7, 0.30 P.M. rear Chie ALM.
