NO COAL FAMINE IF TRANSPORTATION S KEPT NORMAL Bituminous Operators Predict the Production of 55,000,000 Tons This Yaer By John D. Erwin. (Special Staff Cérrespondent of The Evening World.) ALTOONA, Pa. July 20.—Here in the heart of the great bituminous re- @ion of Central Pennsylvania there are at this time but two topics of conversation, One is coal afi the other is transportation, and each is so closely interwoven with the other that every fuctor affecting the one nevitably is reflected immediately in the other. + The output of coal for the calendar year 1918 the Jast year of the war, was approximately 60,000,000 tons In |1919 1t dropped to 46,000,000 tons, due ‘to the miners’ strike, ‘Tis year, pro- vided there are no further interrup- tiohs due to labor troubles, it is esti- |mated by the operators that produc- |tlon will reach 50,000,000 or 55,000,000 |tons. If this latter estimate is ap- proximately correct and transpor- tation conditions become anything like normal, there should be no serious fuél shortage. Approximately 12,000 to 15,000 cas | per’ day, a majority of them loaded with coal, move east and west over the Pennsylvania Railroad through | Altoona, This great system, handles the bulk of the country’s fuel | eupply, is the only one that touches Altoona. One has only to glance at the raiivoad map to visualize the ul- ter dependence of fuel consumers on an uninterrupted flow of cars througi: this important gateway. A traffic tis- up here of even a week's duration would set many industries of the Nation back for weeks or months. The Altoona yard is the last word in modern devices for rapid handling jof freight and its wonderful force of skilled switchmen move the traffic with a speed that has brought the yard renown in transportation circles, If there is no transportation tie-up, rajlroad officials and others in touch with the situation here belie’ reasonable progress will he THE EVENING WORLD, TUESDAY, JULY 2 bringing the coal situation to a nor- mal basis, with adequate supplies for essentialjndustries and domestic con- summers, Both New York and New England draw vast supplies of bituminous coal | from the Altoona region, New Eng- { land uses in all 20,000,000 to 26,000,000. ¢ tons annually, of which normally about 15,000,000 tons vome from this district. | A peculiar feature is that cancella- tiong are now coming in from New bnafind, which can only be explained by the assumption that the eanny New Englanders, who have @ repu- tation for buying at bedrock prices, expect lower figures. The thterstate Commeree Com- mission's now order, No. 9, which ts a modification of order No. 7, reatrict~ ing the use of open top cars to coal for railroads, reached Ajtoona to-day, The modification is intended to take care of pubjic utilities and public in- stitutions of all kinds, which have been in sore straita since the first priority order was issued. Order No. 9 is effective at once, but has not be- come operative, as the public util- ities must first ‘comply with the pro- vision as to filing written applica- | tions for fuel, showing that it is for \immediate consumption and not for storage purposes. The new order takes care of the current fuel needs and interurban railways, electric power and lighting | plants, gas plants, ice plants, water and sewer works, hospitals, schools | and other public institutio he 38th Street at a great reduction. craft. : 193 Parasols Reduced to $7.50 Dresden effects, smart bor- ders of velvet disks or rib- bon edges, little ruffles or pipings in pastel or staple colors; also plain tailored. 95c and $2.95 <= Clearance of. Barring wn increase of (ranaporta- tion troubles, the situation is far from hopeless, Ratlroad ofMfcials in charge of car distribution here say there hae been a stendy improvement since July 4, which they attribute to better labor conditions, Some officials here are at a loss to explain how the coal cars have disappeared so rapidly. While the railroads have been hav- ing their troubles with labor and car supply, the mine operators have had ome troubles of their own With re- spect to labor shortage, due, they think, to “wagon mines” under the influence of a stiff market, offering big wages to miners at the larger mines and luring away their men.
