By Charles Somerville. One of the biggest surprises sprung in baseball, and at the same time ong of the most mysterious deals ever made, was the trading to-day of Benny Kauff, not to a major league club, but to Toronto of the Interna- tional League. The team recures Vernon Spencer, a promising out- fielder, for the renowned old Federal League star. The passing of Benny will be mourned by the fans, for he has @ host of friends not only in this city but everywhere on the big league ctr- cuit. He is popular not only on the field for his enthusiastic effcrts to help his club to win every game, but oft the fleld he is democratic. No fan but what gets a friendly “hello” when Benny sees him. It is odd that all of the big league clubs should grant waivers on this big star, as there are any number of clubs who badly need the services of @ player of his ability. Why he tg let out is thé biggest kind of a baseball mystery. Benny js a young man, and how @ club manager could part with him tn mid-season for a minor league player —even though he does border on star= dom—is hard to understand. Recently Benny became involved in an auto- mobile case that reached the courts « and the scandal growing out of this is the only possible solution of bis be= ing traded Benny got a homer in both games yesterday which the Giants played With the Braves. There were four other hom in the opening battle Doyle also got two homers. In the second game Larry in addition got agger and two singles in four to 7, after eleven heart break: nings, but won the second battle, 13 rgely because of Boston's poor fielding. The six Giants to make homers were Keuft, two; Young, Doyle, two, and Burns. Eddie Sicking, the Giants’ infielder, has been claimed by the Reda under the waiver rule and will go to Cin- cinnat!. The Giants intended to send him to the minors. ————>__—— Yankees Win Again, but Lose Peck for Several Days. PHILADELPHIA, July 3.—Gooa fortune smiled and ill luck frowned on the Yankees yesterday, They won their fourth game of the series with the Athletics, though outhit, when “Tilly’ Walker dropped a fly in the sixth inning that gave them four runs; but their wonderful shortstop and lead-off man, Roger Peckinpaugh, strained a jeg in making an Assist in the second inning and will be out of the game for several days. The score was 7 to 4, and the tle for first place continues. Peckinpaugh bunted in the frst inning and élightly injured his leg sliding to first in a desperate effort te beat Harris's throw. In fielding a smart rap by Welsh he made It still worse and had to get out of the game, ee. taking his place at short, usel coming in to third and Frank Gleich going to left field. With a | double - header coming to - morrow with the Athletics and four big games jover the Fourth with the Senators, the Yanks are "pulling for a quick re- recovery for Peck. Even with Shawkey, Mogrid Lewis and Peck on the hospital I the Yanks are able to present Il strone ynt, and “Chick” Fewster j waiting wn the bench, anxious to get into the game, Ruth kept up his hitting yesterday thowsh he got no homers. His hits wei ing line smashes over the roof the infield, He'll get the A, L, batting lead if he keeps up this gait Koney’s Hit in Ninth Gives | Robins Game Over Phils. | A solid smash to leftfield by “Big Ea” <onetchy in the ninth inning after Hy Myers had been purposely passed, gave the Robins a victory over the Phillies | by a score of 2 to 1 in the opening game jof the series at Ebbets Field yesterday | afternoon. Incidentally it was tl fourth straight victory for the Fiatbush team. ‘Along in the ninth inning Pete Kildutt worked Cecil “Red” Causey, who was in there doing the, pitching for the Phillies, for a base on balls. Zack Wheat, whi had made nary a hit all day, smash a single to centre and Kilduff raced for third, Mr. Kilduff had no trouble In making the bag, for “Irish” Me ohiixed, by fumbling, the bal. Mr. Gavvy Cravath, who bosses tl ‘phillies, signalled for Causey to pase Myers, ‘This filled the bases and brought Konetchy to the plate, There were two strikes on the big baseman when he crashed a gingle between Meusel and lanky Cy Williams, Home came Kilduff with the run that sent the fans on thelr homeward journey. | Pitching for the Robins was “Big \Jett” Pfefter, There is no doubt that Jeff can pitch.
