i a Shaw in Khaki BY CHARLES DARNTON HBORAH BIDRNE'S Irish Play- ers made a good start at the 39th Street Theatre last night ewhen they acted three short plays with genuine skill and a native fervor Ahat suggested something more than mere make-believe, The chie€ novelty of the bill was Bernard Shaw's satirical comedy O'Flaherty, V. C.," given here for the rst time. O'Flaherty is Shaw in , Shaw with a brogue and a ‘tain vengeance. Now that the t is over, the little play may be taken playfully, though even to-day the English might not find it ex- actly to their taste, Aside from his ible prejudices, the Irish soldier jor home on leave wearing the Vic- toria Cross is not unlike Shtiw's gariier chocolate soldier in his indif- “erence to the glory of war and his on, everyday sense of its real- ities, He recalis without enthusiasm that the King shook his hand, also that the Queen was in the picture, wut he could think of nothing to say, and she could think of nothing to eay, poor woman! His mother was not lacking for words when she dis- covered he had been fighting for the "English, wiile his sweetheart dis- glayed such a mercenary interest in the pension he might get if he were severely wounded, that he longed for ‘Yhe comparative peace and quiet of Flanders. After a war of words be- tween the women, he could only sigh and. stretch himself on. a. bench, ‘Thought a bit uncertain in his lin Pp. J. Kelly made O'Flaherty amusing fellow. Maire Roden-Quinn played the mother capitally, and MoMie Carroll wae pretty and ‘clever as the sweetheart. Mr. Kelly acted the ballad singing patriot in Lady Gregory's familiar ‘play “The Rising of the Moon” in an engaging and efective way. Then there was a real ballad singer who made a direct appeal to the audience from the orchestra pit. (Matchmaking went on while a train “was held at the station in “A Min- ute's Wait,” an amusing comedy by Martin McHugh. Helen Bvily, Mr. Kelly and Bdward O'Connor did e: cellent character work in this plece. The Irish Players were given a hearty welcome, rake “ane eaes REAL BURLESQUE FILM AND PHOTOPLAY WITH “PUNCH” AT THE STRAND Mack Sennett's five reel comedy, ‘YMarried Life,” 1s what is probably attracting a good part of the big watronage at the Strand this weex, but those who go to laugh get a real “punch” in the other half of the screen bill, “The Great Accident,” tn which ‘Tom Moore ts starred, It 1s the story of a “wet" town that Is made “bone dry” when the “town souse” ts elected Mayor by a political trick, and {s above the average in de- velopment and players. Aside from Mr, Moore the acting honors go to Ann Forrest. The latest long Sennett comedy is forty-four minutes of hilarfty. Ben Turpin with his funny eyes, holds the cemtre of the screen and the other Sennett favorites, Charles Conklin, Charlie Munphy, Ford Sterling, Louise Fazenda and Phyllis Haver are much in evidence.
