MARION, O., June 17.—There is a story current here in Marion—the number of men sitting in their shirt sleeves whittling or ruminating on the cob)* house steps are ample evi- dence of a mint for such currency— that Warren G. Harding started out véry valiantly last March gn a speech- }tour which was to glorify the iS Republican Party, at least as far as the Pacific Caast, Everything went very well, the speeches were made with the customary welcoming of the erator, “We have with us this eve- ning,” until Harding got as far as Denver, Then, accdrding to the town gos- sips, he turned right around and eame right back. When the gos- sip promoters were asked why he abandoned the trip, they waggled their heads, with sidelong glances. At last one of them, who separated himself from his fellows, said he cal- culated it was on account of the things his newspaper, the Marion Daily Star, had published about The- odore Roosevelt and a lot of other Republican fellows back in 1912, when the Bull Moose party appeared. ft appears that these ‘editorial ut- terances, carefully culled, had been sént out ahead of Mr. Harding, his ftinerary being known, and that they had greeted him not only in the news- papers of several cities in which he spoke, but had been used to advan- tage by “hecklers” in his audiences, who had asked an explanation of them. “OLD POLITICAL STUFF.” SAID HARDING, Mr. Harding's replies to these, it was said, had been that a lot of old political stuff had been dug up; that ft was all past history; that after- ward he and Mr. Roosevelt, for in- atance, had “made up" and were friends again as xood Americans, When your correspondent made his first inquiry about the files of the Star at the office of the Marion Tri- bune, a Democratic adversary, he was told that those of the 1912, months which contained most of the (Continued on Fifteenth Page.) sea ee to Cost More, Jamaica, June 1.— ®Banana prices have been increased $2 4@ bunch wholesale as a result of the rivalry between American and Jarnaican companiés in securing the frulr The present price is the highest ¢ reached and is expected to force banana prices tn the United States to new high Classified Adver tisers Important ! heset fed Styertising. copy for Sunday World ould be in The Wortd office On or Before Friday . Swann, Fred McCloy, manager of the Columbia Theatre, tells me that your assistant, James E, Smith, told him I was acting as a stool pigcon for Inspector Lahey and am engaged in keeping tabs on Smith." “You say my assistant said that?" snapped Swann. “You believe he alled you a stool pigeon? You come right into his office and ask him Side by side the two entered Smith's atfice a few yards down the hall, When the question was put to bim, Smith denied he had used such language. Owens then said “You called me down here eight rs ago and tried to put me out.” ‘That was on a different matter,” replied Smith, 8 n then took a hand. “You get out of this building and never enter it again,” he told Owens, “You are merely ah instrument of the dirty, rotten, unprincipled police sys- tem of this city that is trying to get something on my assistant. You get out—get out quick.” “Mr. 6 * said Owens, “I want witnesses to this. “You get out of this," cried Swann angrily, “or I'll have you put out You have all the witnesses you want.” When Owens failed to move, Swann turned hurriedly into the De lective Bureau and called Detective taynes in charge. To Raynes Swann said: t this man put out of this building, “You see that he gets out quick," Raynes and Owens, followed by several newspaper men, walked out of the building, Standing under the Bridge of Sighs in Franklin Street Owens said he resented the state- ments which he asserted Smith had made about him, Telephone communication with McCloy brought corroboration of the assertions made by Owens, McC giving the detective permission to tell what he alleged Smith had said regarding the policeman —_ ELIA ORDERED DEPORTED Was Arrested With Anarchist Who Killed Himvelf He WASHINGTON, June 17. ots on June ted to-day by Assia- with the bomb dd at Mu Will take ada, on J Miss | heré from Bryn Mawr 8.
