Y. : Y DBAR COUSINS: Folks who live in the country think that we city people—eapecially Nev. Yorkers—do not see a bird or a flower all the year round, and that we scarcely know how a@ green tree looks. But that is not true. Of course there are plenty of city dwellers who do not find birds and such like inter- esting, but I know a great many | farmers who would not go to the door to see a bird of paradise should | it happen ‘by.’ But for folk who do like to make acquaintances among the feather folk there are plenty of ©pportunitiés in the big city. In the spring birds coming north along the Atlantic coast like to stop here. At this season there are hun- dreds and thousands to be seen in our parks and throughout the tree-spotted sections. Sometimes a lucky chance will bring a bird family to live next door, or somewhere near enough to enable us to watch their movements, By such a chance a couple, Mr. and _ Mrs. English Sparrow, once came to live.tn the very same house with me. T lived just inside the window, while ‘they lived just outside it in a hole im the wall where a brick had been, we camé to know each other very . Mr. Sparrow and his wife Svery inorning, and that T was wilivg morning, at I was willing to share my meal with them. At first I had to put crumbs on the outside ‘} window sill to coax them out of the cozy home, but Nett fourth day they were there on the sill chirping a greeting and fluttering their wings eagerly. ‘Then the eggs came and Mr. Spar- row—attentive lover that he was— its of bread to Mrs, at all fluffed out on 88 It was when there were four hungry Mouths in the nest, where the four row began wearying of fi He would leave the nest, their four screaming babies and ri turn without bringing them a single morsel, And everybody knows how babies look forward to their: daddy bringing them something very ‘nice. This went on for a little while, w one day (it was raining hard, too,) he came back to find mother bird perched on the very tip edge of the nest and refusing to let him in. With the help of her wings she leaned way out and screamea and pecked at him every time he came near. Mr. Spar- row seemed to understand, Off he went and back he came bringing a nice fat worm, which he gave up as the price of admission to his own home. Next day ft was the same. Mrs. Sparrow met him at the door and, seeing that he had again come home empty-billed, scolded and drove him off.. This went on until the fledglings were jearned in procuring their own food and how otherwise to take care af themselves. One would think that Mr. Sparrow would have found himself a less ex- acting mate next year. But, to our surprise the following spring found the same two in the same home liv- ing in the same way.
