F All-American Cast Presents Fine‘ Faust’ By Sylvester Rawling. OT in many years has there been such a brilliant performance of “aust” as the one given at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. The traditional aristocratic at- mosphere for. which Gounod's music calis was well maintained, the singing ‘was of excellent quality and the act- ing was good. Moreover, and this is the significant fact, the cast was all- American. Geraldine Farrar was Marguerite. She has pruned her impersonation of its bizarre attributes and her wppeal, made now on simpler if more conven- tional lines, is effective. Last night sho was charming alike to ear and eye. Orville Harrold was Faust, his singing luscious in quality, his bear- ing fairly romantic, but ‘ware the | avoirdupois, Mr, Harrold! In Clar- ence Whitehill there was a Mephis- topheles of rare distinction, vocally and histrionically. He must be ranked with the best exemplars of character. One must hark back a long time to think of a ‘better. Valentin than ‘Thomas Chalmers, good alike in voice | and in action. Kathleen Howard was | far more interesting than the accus- tomed Marthe, and Louis @Angelo mnde Wagner significant. Dainty little Mary Ellis, of course, couldn't begin to make Sicbel convincing. For that matter who could? Mr. Wolf conducted admirably. A ®reat audience was generous in ac- knowledging its pleasure. The fourth of the Frederic Warren ballad concerts took place at Aeolian Hall yesterday afternoon, It was the most interesting of the series. Dicie Howell, soprano, sang charmingly in French, Italian and English, Reim- herr, tenor, sang a group of Japa- nese folk songs, Loraine.Wvman of “Lonesome Tunes" fame, sang songs ef Brittany and Ireland, and Harry Anderton, pianist, playel composi- tions by Mozart, Debussy and Liszt. Harriette Cady gave her annual piano recital at the Princess ‘Theatre yesterday afternoon. Her programme included a sonata by Weber and com- positions by Scarlatti, Romeau and Albeniz,. At Aeolian Hall last night Wilsot Lamb, a negro baritone, gave a re- cital of songs by Rachrtaninoft, Moussorgsky, Debussy, Coleridge, Tay Burleigh. of Sally's, She washed it with Twink, Sally danced cup come alive! } Everything pe frocks, louse the sun faded so, sister’s sober school dress—all come ¢rowding to be (made bright Chareh Drive tm Brooklyn Opem Results of the world survey con- ducted by the Interehurch World Movement will be shown on the sereen of the Brooklyn Academy of |} Music to-night in the opening meet- ing of the church organizations’ drive here. raw morning.
