\, m& “ DEMOCRATS FORCE’ DRY LAW ISSUE IN ALBANY PLATFORM (Continued from Second Page.) present and played “The Wearing of the Green.” The playing of the old @th Reg ment’s favorite tune was co- incidental with the announcement that the women had decided to put the rollers under Mrs, Colbert of Al- any when she refused to withdraw. Later on the band made another hit im the middle of Gov. Smith's speech when he said that he was no hypo- crite and they had taken away from us even the choice moments of good cheer. The air was full of cheer at that and the band broke loose with “How Ory I Am.” Another funny little incident fol- Jowed the request of Chairman Cullen for the men to please stop smoking. Mrs. Lillian Sre arose and clamed the attention of the chair, and told the convention that the ladies didn't object to smoking; that they were used | to the smoking ‘of their husbands: | fathers, brothers and sofis, and they ddn't propose that their presence among the men should deprive them of any of their pleasures, Great applause followed the sentl-| ment, ut Chairman Cullen said the} request was not made altogether in deference to the sisters of the con- vention, but on account of the speak- ers and poor ventilation of the hall. LUNN WINS A POINT, BUT SLATE GOES THROUGH. ‘The only kck which the machine heard came from Mayor George R. Lunn of Schenectady, who opposed the wet plank in the platform and forestalied his protest by the an- Rouncement that he was not in favor of Prohibition. He said that the reso- lution was mere camouflage, that it amounted to nothing and had been sid in on the rest of the delegates. “I'd like to know,” he said, “how many men in this convention knew that this plank was in the platform before they met here to-day.” Then, a@ little tater, when he was asked what he had to offer as a substitute for the plank, he pulled a bit of paper from hs pocket and said that he had written something that he would read. “Just by chance,” he said, “T heard of this plank about an hour and a half before coming to the hall.” He didn’t get any further with that explanation for there was a big laugh at his expense. He dd not join in the laugh. but he smiled and insieted ‘upon substituting a plank to the effect that the convention favored a consti- tutional amendment making all con- et tutional amendments hereafter pos- sible only through the vote of the people. Senator Bernard Downing arose to a point of order. He said that the plank was senseless as it couldn't pos- sibly affect the Prohibition amend- ment, and he got a great cheer when he said in impassioned tones that the platform expressed better than any- Party on all issues, hate ead! they did not sidetrack of Schei yyy AE plank ines wae | no attempt to. They voted his amendment, or substitute, as an Pw Megas | p yey So the slate wasn't roken all, and Mayor Lunn got what he-w wanted. Mayor Lunn was accorded an ova- tion after his achievement, and the little incident showed that the powerg that be do not want to break friendly relations with the Mayor of Schenec- tady. The Mayor is a strong possib!l- ity for the nomination for United States Senator, and he is known as a wonderful vote getter, His friends sav that he is the one man in the State who can Jefeat Senator Wads- worth. The fay to the Senatorial nomina- tion wil, be clearedefor the Mayor, It is by the retirement of Gov, Smith, who will be a candidate for re-election :o the Gubernatorial chair, In his speech the Governor mad» the following reference to the tariir: “Did you notice in the Republican declaration that little, short reference to the tariff? 1 hate to be critical of them to the extreme, but it amuses me so much that I want to spread around some of the pleasure and joy I got from reading that little refer- ence to the tariff. They know perfuctly well that they can do nothing with the tariff, as they know perfectly well that ‘the American. people will never permit any party to fool with the tariff schedule of this country again. They know full well, and they have to meet the charge and an- swer it anyway they possibly can, that the Democratic Party is entitled to the fullest possible measure of credit for taking the tariff out of the pul:tics of the country for all tinte to come. “Now, that being true, and they being men of intelligence and of un- derstanding, there must be a reason. ‘That little reference to the tariff was just a Uttle piece of bait. Murphy to appear in his seat at the head of the Tammany del- egation in the convention. Many of them wanted a glimpse of the famous leader, and a lot of them wanted a word or two with the great man, but Mr, Murphy had been up nearly all the night before wrestling with the problems the women's initiation into politics had produced and fixing up the slate. So instead of taking his place tn the convention he delegatel the honor to Thomas F. Smith. But fast night the chief expressed great satisfaction with the selection of the women among the Big Four and departed from his usual rule of silence in the presence of interviewers to say the following: “The Democratic women of the State, as represented in this conven- tion, have demonstrated fully by their hearty interest and their intelli- gent activities the wisdom of giving them the full franchi FAMILY SAVED BY DOG.
