‘THE EVuNING WORLD, MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1919, By Roger Batchelder. N the reviéw of the holiday week at Essex Market Court, one item, which has before been touched ‘apon priefty, etill stands forth as the imeident of the week. And though it * peally happened Tuesday night, it was) not until Saturday that it was settled tor good. Tuceday, at ¢ o'clock, Joe Levy, the Duke of Hasex Street, placed the Penal Code in its Proper position on the radiator, hid his address book un- ~derneath the blotter of his desk, and then romped royally im his limousine to his Riverside Drive home, which has the best view of Palisades Park and Grant's Tomb thimt anybody could get with money @r anything else. It had been a good day, and when he came to Central Park, the Duke ordered his chauffeur to make another tour of the Park and not to mind the waste of gasoline. Wednesday morning, however, when he came to his legal sanctum, which is at 61 East Second Street, and as Bear to the grand old temple of justice Qs anything could be without being on top of it, the Duke fqund a sorry state of affairs. His table was gone, the table on which he was wont to thresh out legal problems with the Bast Siders, had taken wings and every chair in the place had disap- ‘od. Also his electric light bulbs pal ei ike 6 rn gone hence. 7 e @ raid,” declared the Duke solemn! And it was . raid, The Duke went downstairs and found both vhairs in 00d condition. But there was not a } trace of the table, the Penal Code nor electric light bulbs. An hour jater, however, the light came, though not the bulbs. For Judge Corrigan, who was sitting in the court, beard! the case of twenty-five alleged mas- ters of the leaping dominoes (known in legal circles as “craps”), all of whom were accused of hurling the Lenox Avenue cubes on the Duke's law table in the cellar of the Duke's law office. “Anyway, after stealing all my fur- giture and legal ammunition, they might have let me be their lawyer,” exclaimed the grouchy Duke as he rushed from his stand in front of the rt house to the court room, we Corrigan heard the case. The twenty-five defendants had, in the opinion of the detective, been playing African golf at a “Where is the evid Honor of the “Dick. “I have Joe Levy's law table and some of his electric light bulbs,” re- plied the cop. “Ie that all?" asked Judge Corri- ce?" asked His fT should say that was enough to wend anybody to the Island,” ex- ploded the Dike from the front row His Honor de- creed that the crap]*; r Vio-|cmasssentan nn lated no law unless NEXT oo t mn break- { Be By entering. wut ‘the cop didn't al whether thoy broken any- thing and entered.) er bad just walked tac ry pin- teh regarding In- epee tors who who brought a mass meeting electric Nght bulbs. They take the ground that he is an avowed partisan and has had little experience in municipal adminis- tration, into court, His Honor dismissed the defendants, “But how about my table and Penal Code and electrie lights?” inquired the Duke. “How is the grand old temple going to keep on the job. I guess it will be on the, bum now if I don't get back my Penal Code and table and electric lights.” But nothing could be done. It was up to the cops to return the evidence. And Saturday, after the Duke had for three days been reciting from memory the laws of New York, from smoking in the subway to striking mothers-in-law with cream pitchers, the table and Penal Code came back.
