By Vincent Treanor. HE principal topic of conversa- tion at the Yonkers race track yesterday was just how far Charlie Stoneham, owner of the Giants, has gone toward the purchase of the Havana racing plant, which for several years has been under the con- trol of “Curly” Brown, All that was known on the track was that Stone- ham, accompanied by John McGraw and a logal adviser, had gone to Cuba to look the plant over, but whether or net be had overcome the obstacles that stood in the way of its purchase by George W. Loft this spring could not be discussed authoritatively. Mr. Loft had his mind get on own- * ing the beautiful Havana plant, but when the time approached for a final setulement of the terms, Mr. Loft was surprised to learn that Mr. Brown Wished to retain certain privileges; for Instance, that of control of the club house, which, with its day and night gambling, is probably the big- Rest source of the property's revenue. | This, to Mr. Loft, amounted to buying just a piece of ground with nothing |on it but what the attendance in gate receipts might bring forth, ‘The deal ended then and there, as far ay Mr. Loft was concerned, and shortly after that time, when gam- by bilng was legalized on the isiand for a term of twenty yeara, Mr. Brown ts alleged to have said that he wouldn't sell the property to anybody. How Stoneham became interested ip the project in view of this, is more or less mysterious, but so was his Purchase of the Giants, until the actual facts became known suddenly. It is a sure thing, however, that Mr. |Stoneham isn't buyingacat in a bag, and it is likely if he purchased the Havana track he will get all that |govs with it, or at least his money's | worth, | While a Wall Street man Stonaham jis by nature a spoftsinan, not the supertatively wise kind, but one who knows his business as well as the next man, Havana haa been growing jin popularity for the last few years, land with everything that roca with the various gumes of chance legalized, it bids felr to become America’s Monte Carlo. In his match with White, Dyer, by winning the second and third holes, became 2 up, and thereafter always had the advantage. A lapse In put ting, combined with a faulty short Mashie shot, caused practically all White's troubles yesterday.
