Day, Market Commissioner, made a deal with Swift & Co. to dis- tribute at 35 cents a pound. It was this deal, followed by the Army's offer to supply similar bacon at 23 cents a pound; to be retailed at 28 cents a pound, that led Mayor Hylan to criticise Dr. Day. Although Dr. Day ta selling the 28 cent bacon, @ heavy demand is re- ported by butchers handling the sume product at 8% and % cents, from those willing to pay the extra margin for the convenience of ge'- ting ft at the stores. Arthur Will- jams, Federal Food Administrator, culaplimented Dr, Day for the efforts which revealed the existence of the big supply and will eventually result in distributing several millions of pounds at about two-thirds of hitherto prevailing prices.
