MISSING BANKER GATHERED INCASH WITHOUT EASE Investigation of Baldo’s Papers Shows State Didn’t Know of His Operations. Investigation to-day into the books and papers of Giuseppe Baldo, the Brony private banker who disap. peared from his little banking office and home at No. 2472 Arthur Ave- nue, the Bronx, last Saturday, dis- closed that he had no State license to conduct a bank. He simply went into the banking business, His busi- ' jess was never examined and his books were nevis clicked up off- ejalty Because Ba ndependent Joperations the Satig Bunking De- partment, having jurisdietion, |} withdrew from the investigation to- day. District Attorney Francis Mar- tin, of the Bronx, took charge. Baldo ran a one-man bank. He had no assistants and nobody can be found who knows anything about his business or what he usually con- cealed in the safe which was found to be empty after his disappearance. ‘The only Banking books found are the little dog eared volumes giving the names of depositors in Baldo's bank. It appears that from these books that he generally carried about | $16,000 belonging to some 350 trusting customers, He also acted as an agent for the American Express Co,' in transmitting money to Italy, ‘The express company holds a bond which is ample to protect such persons as eent money through Baldo in case he does not return, Papers found in Baldo’s desk indi- CUT PRICES The best known remedies and toilet at prices lower than they have been in a long time your HEALTA 89 Aopirin Tablets, (U. Their sense of fairness will impel them to go to the registration booths to-night and to-morrow night, be- tween the hours of 5 and 10.80 o'clock, and sign their names as yoters in the coming election—and when they sign, they will make a pledge to them- selves to go to the polls on election day and vote for the re-election of Supreme Court J ustice J oseph E. Newburger City Court Judge Richard H. Smith Joseph E, Newburger has been a judge for twenty- eight yeafs, * ~ Richard H. Smith has been a judge for ten years. Both are men of fine ability and character. No scandal of any kind, political or otherwise, has ‘ever been attached to their names. No decisions rendered by them have ever been under suspicion, They have given their fine talents and their in- tegrity unreservedly to the courts over which they, have presided. At a meeting of the Joint Committee of the Bar with the Non-Partisan Business Men’s Association and the Citizens’ Union, held on Tuesday night, to promote the re-election of Justices Newburger and Smith, the following striking statements were bodied in a _ resolution which was enthusiastically adopted: em- “The pending election presents a moral issue of vital import to every citizen, “Public opinion has successfully demanded that judges of demonstrated character and ability shall be continued in office, irrespective of political or other considerations. “The public. is entitled to the experience and sound judgment which comes from years in the public service. “Judges should be absolutely free from any obliga- tions, direct or indirect, to political bosses. “No honest reasons can be advanced to displace judges of established integrity, ability and _ inde- pendence.” Ex-Justice Clarence J, Shearn, who recently re- tired from the Supreme Court, made a strong speech Tue$day night, eloquently urging the re-election of Jus- tices Newburger and Smith. He said in part: “For many years as a practising lawyer I was and While a serious recurrence of the influenza epidemic is not anticipated, it is always well to be prepared by having some reliable cold remedy in the home, and an excellent preventive measure is to make it » daily habit to spray the mose and throat with aneffectiveantiseptic. HE WAS ABSORBED IN IT AND HAD NO OTHER INTERESTS. “There was never an instance of unfairness, or of slip« shod work. “Clarity, industry and conscientious impartiality were his outstanding qualities, “I share the resentment felt alike by the Bar, bust’ ness men, the press, and all independent citizens of this wanton and indefensible attempt to return to the evil days when judgeships were treated as political spoils, “We are determined to fight for a clean judiciary, free from political control and for the principle that good judges shall be continued in office without having to strike a bargain with any party boss.” A cpocial feature stores every Friday and eras scares Ootalae Breathe’ Gacge ghocotgce, Pee, id, 1 pe cet t ingghge v m4 ch ie $00 the BQ sean Sec CANDY | for 56c CHOCOLATE fresh roasted and ground, Our regular price 5So— Friday and Saturday only, per pound , . . le ICE CREAM 2 DROPS, (sera emg Special c 49 pound Just pure vanilla .) cream centres, THE SAFE’ “DRUG STORES with chocolate.
