Alderman Palitz says the ordinance is in the hands of the General Wel- fare Committee and he expects it to be reported by that committee next Wednesday. “Have you heard of any opposition to it?” he was asked. “Yos, a great deal, on the part of profiteering landlords and lessees,” he answered. “Has any opposition developed in the Board of Aldermen?” “I haven't heard of any. I don't see how any Alderman can face his con wtituency after voting against a moas- ure which everybody who is opposed to rent profiteering favors. Why thousands of tenants in this city don’ even know who their landlords are. because leases are passed on every month or two from one irresponsible person or company to another. Ti ordinance will work no injury to any landlord who is not profiteering, but it will bring these speculating lesscx into the open, and we shall knqw wh they are and whether they are doing | a legitimate business or are merely organized to extort unreasonable rent ais from tenants at a time when all are suffering from the high cost of living and the shortage of apart- ments.” Alderman William T. Collins, Chair- man of the General Welfare Commit tes, which ts considering this ordi- iy nance, could not be found to-day, but friends of his, who said they’ had talked with him on the subject, de- clared him to be heartily in favor of the proposed law. Walter S. Kennedy, the Assistant Corporation Counsel in charge of the law work of the Mayor's Committee on Rent Profiteering, said to The Evening World that such an or- dinance would do more to help rid this city of rent profiteers than any- thing else be could think of. Mr. Kennedy has investigated tens of thousands of complaints against land- lords and corroborates Alderaan Palitz’s statement that 90 per cent. of tho real cases of rent profiteering 1s by lessees, most of them irrespon- sible, many of them aliens, out to Brat the last possible peahy from their tenants, — CORK EXAMINER RAIDED, PART OF PLANT REMOVED Military Authorities Suppress Paper That Printed Advertisement of Irish Loan.
