All he has to do is to go to the theatre, and get his training from melodramas that put Sherlock Holmes in; the smoking tobacco section of the rocking-chair magazines. Sb-h! “A Voice in the Dark” was heard last night at the Republic! ‘Tneatre and answered by applause that put the play “over” with both bands. It is not too much to say that A. H. Woods climbed out of a sick- bed to see one of the best melodramas associated with the mankgePial too- bag he is sapposed to clap on his brow when considering the drama as a -nental strain, “A Voice in the Dark” is another of those murder mystery plays, this time by Ralph EB, Dyar, who 80 mild and moreover intelligent in his talk to the audience that ever a theatrical manager couldn't possibly suspect him of having murder in his heart. Mr. Dyar was, backed up by Willard Mack, who éats melodrama alive, no matter whethbr he happens | to be writing or acting: In his amusing remarks Mr. Mack was like « big brother to the little stranger. Blanche ig suspected of the crime because she has been at a road- house with the vi.imin who is deter- mined to marry her younger sister. But in spite of the roadhouse Blanche is as pure as baking-powder, though she does blow up at times. Then there ts @ blind man who sells news- papers at @ railway station, where he | overhears the confession of the guilty Person. Just who this person is I must leave you to guess in justice to the play and your possible interest in it, Far be it from me to “give away” & good story. But I may add that the story ends @ bit too abruptly for the good of the play, This is the only fault to be found with it. The acting was excellent. Olive Wyndham gave charm and sincerity to the troubled heroine, never over- acting and always makine one feel that she had given her heart to the young lawyer played by William Boyd in a well-bred manner, Server it is the world made from fruit composed of the medicinal pie been oranges, fi Cod antibeptien, | rolled to take the places of % per cent. ‘That sure-fire ‘crook- actress, Anne Sutherland, was true to the pike as a roadhouse keeper; Florine Arnold gave a brusque performance as the deaf woman, and William B, made the old ‘newsman a real . Arieen Hackett acted with ad- mirable restraint, and Stewart KE. Wilson gave a good example of a nerve-strung youth, Frank Monroe was 4 typical “bull,” as the term goes in police circles, and John Sharl.ey Was both direct and amusing as a Pinkerton detective. If you like murder mystery plays you dre sure to be held by “A Voice in the Dark,” for it is vibrant melo- drama, ingenious, interesting and ably acted. —_—_—_——_——_—. NAVY SEEKS AIRMEN.
