AM ee om = iy Every Saturday Morning in EX satorio, THE EVENING WORLD, THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1919.7 Standard Oil Co. of New York ay Fifteen Hundred Miles of Railroad—and a Can of Blackberry Jam E AMERICANS built a railroad in France. It is nearly fifteen hundred miles long—long enough to run from here to Denver if it were on this side of the Atlantic. We made the rails in this country, shipped them to France, put them down over there. Then we sent over the things to finish the job and make it a regular American railroad system. In less than eighteen months we sent over— 1,739 locomotives 21,764 railroad cars 2,803 engineers 2,803 firemen 2,000 conductors 5,709 brakemen Can you get the picture—American brakemen swinging along over the roofs of the cars, and yelling “Low bridge!” as they duck the German shells? And still some people think that all you need to win a war is men and guns, The can of blackberry jam? Oh, yes! We sent over one for every soldier in the American Army. It made the boys feel more like home when the Germans were dropping shells into the trenches. Railroads and blackberry jam cost money even when you buy one railroad and two million cans of jam. The other things that we sent to France cost money, too—lots of it. More than we raised in the four Liberty Loans—and then some. That’s the reason your Country is asking you to subscribe to the Victory Loan—to pay for the things that made our Victory possible.
