| oy SyUART ON *SEVEN DAYS LEAVET BRONX OPERA HOUSE No Rest for the Weary 1. 1} In This Bedroom Farce; Keeps Everybody Awake Even Mabel Might Well Cry Out, “ Ain’t It» Awful?” About ‘‘Up in Mabel’s Room.” BY CHARLES DARNTON. VEN Mabel might exclaim in Jack Hazzardous tones, “Ain't it awful?” E ‘There is no rest for the weary in bedroom farce, Somebody | is always breaking into the wrong room, so that nobody can hope ws enooze, The yictiim of insomnia who seeks farce 1s lost the moment he starts down the aisle. He may be sure that both himself and the characters in the play he is to see are “in” for a wakeful night. For example, take “Up in Mabel’s Room,” in which Hazel Dawn tries to go to bed before daylight. The play is wholly lacking in wit Its authors, Wilson Collison and Otto Harbach, have failed to enliven it with humor. But as a farce of situations it provokes laughter, and when an audience laughs there is little more to be said. If one could follow logically the idea suggested by bedroom farce the play would be im~ possible, It must be given an atmosphere of innocence, therefore the man in the case is usually made the “goat” of the simple proceedings, Now, “Up in Mabel’s Room” is largely a matter of lingerie, But in his efforts to recover a trifle he has given a girl of his earlier fancy, that exeellent comedian of repression, John Cumberland, crawls under bed and pops up just in time to be met by ga ter, Me thé intimate piece of lingerie he is bent upon recovering is flaunted like an advertisement, Mr. Cumberland serves merely as an end to a means. He sputters and Walter Jones gasps—and the audience is in an uproar. Mics Dawn, who used to sing, has nothing to do but look attractive and then go to bed, After all, acting is a simple thing! | Farce is nothing these days if not “intimate,” in fact it tempts one to say things that cannot be polite print, The line must bo drawn some- where, especially at the bedroom door, Yet this same door opens wide on the stage, and through {t pass various characters more or less disturbed. Usually, we consider the bed- room as a place of rest, but far be it from the modern writer of farce to take this point of view. He evidently feels it his pri , if not his duty, to keep everybody awake. ‘When routed out of her nest, the bride in “Keep It to Yourself” tells her husband, “I wasn’t lonely at all!"—and the audienco sirieks with delight at her innocent remark. You may bo sure of one thing in bedroom farce—the woman Is pro- tected by the virtuous playwright. He stands as a guard at her door, though he permits ber to bo hustled about in the most unceremonious manner. It 1s tho {nnocent man in the case who faces danger at every \ step he takes in his slippers, With him it is a whirl of movement, The hypnotized chap in “Keep It to Yoursel(” is little less than an acrobat nd Edwin Nicander is so funny in the first act that the remaining a do not matter. For him there {s no sleep. “Action” must be kept up, and to keep it up people are carried about and stuck into closets when there {s no other hiding place for them, From the French, perhaps, keep audiences awake with the things that would ordinarily put them to sleep.
