Buck wears the Medal of the Legion of Honor, the highest award for valor in the gift of the French, and the Distinguished Service Cross, the decoration of his own country. The decorations were bestowed on the valiant soldier because of his work at Berzy-le-Sec on July 21. He was then @ Brigadier General, }and when nearly all the officers of his brigade had been killed or wound- ed he, himself, took immediate com- mand, giving personal directions and lleading the attack which ended in the fall of the town. Besides receiving the Legion of | Honor Medal and the Distinguished Service Cross, he was promoted ‘to Major General. ‘The following recommendation was in the American communique of Aug. 26, on which he was awarded the Cross and sub- | sequently promoted: “Brig.
