| PAYNE WHITNEY JOINS ARMY AS INFANTRY PRIVATE Lawyer and thle Athlete Decides Not to Wait for the Draft— Goes to to Camp Lee. Payne Whitney, one of the best known of the group of younger wealthy men of the city, has enlisted as @ private in the Infantry. While within the draft age, Mr. Whitney lecided not to walt, and within a week will report for duty at Camp Lee, Virginia, where he will undergo intensive training. Mr, Whitney is the eon of the late ‘Wiliam C. Whitney, Secretary of the Navy undor President Cleveland, and is @ younger brother of Henry Payno Phitney. His mother, who was Flora Payne, daughter of the late United States Senator Henry B, Payne of Ohio, died in 1392, The fact that Mr. Whitney was born to great wealth had no effect on his letermination to make the most of bimself. He was graduated fro . Yale in 1898. He took his law course at Harvard and recetved his LL. from that university in 1901. In May of that year he wo admitted to the Bar in this State.
