G. Bowdoin. A feature of the Sixth Annual Con- | vention of the United Synagogues of | America and the First Convention of | Yy the Jewish Women’s League, which | was held at the Jewish Theological | Seminary, No, 631 West 1234 Street, on June 16 and 17, waa an exhibition of Jewish sculpture by Jules L. But-| onsky, which was arranged in the manuscript room of the Seminary Li- brary. This will be on exhibition there e until Saturday. The ten pieces as executed by Mr. Butensky, now shown, are characte: ised by vigor and fidelity. | In some of the exhibition pieces Mr. Butensky has allowed consider- able play to his imagination ‘with pleasing results. | His symbolic figure, “The Exile,” the original of which is now in the| White House, appears in plaster rep- lica, la The Jewish man, with bis dunnage, | and the infant held in his right arm, | are delightfully modelled in the round. The details of the long coat are happily carried out, and the sym- bolism of cold that is associated with it is pronouncedly fine in its projec- tion. Mr. Butensky has indulged in some iflage in his bronze figurine “The Serenade,” which deals very pleasantly with @ portrait of the concierge of the house in which Mr Butensky lived in Parts. The attitule is eminently typical and the costum- ing 1s highly realistic. “Balaam” suggests a Tissot figure. As shown “Balaam” has parted com- | pany with his , and has assumed | the prophetic atfitude. In his right hand he carries a staff, about which there is a serpent entwined. Hjs face | has a sinister expression. The drap- ery of the robe is well executed. | A small Yunette in bron# is en- titled “Pegasus in Yoke.” Mr, But- ensky has here clipped the wings of the winged horse and yoked him with | a bull, doing the sculptured work in low relief. The plough nd the driver, | with hls lashed whip, are pleasing incidentals. “The New Era,” based upon a Centaur and a Spinx in mortal com- bat, is progressively modern in treat- | ment. ‘The arts and crafts for the Jewish | Home, as shown by Miss Hajnalka Langer, Include embroideries, sten- cils, paper objects, atamped leather, | iuminating. laces, trays, symbolle | | No C. Hudson, has been given the place of honor. The oak tree of the painting has been glorified, and as projected is superbly rendered. The gnarled trunk and wie branching is well expressed, |and the tree stands on a well chosen minence, The mist of the picture ts effective to a degrees. “Retrieving,” by Edward H. Pott- hast, is a pleasing marine, dealing with an adorable child by the seaside, who ix shown engaged in throwing a pectant dog to recover. The colors are inteelligently used in the painting. “Caroline,” by Cornelia Whitehurst, is a study of an infant girl, seated in a chair, The bare arms and legs are in good flesh tones, and her hat is rakishly tilted on her childish head, after the fashion set by her elders. |The young face is charged with much coyness and the child has her doll lying in her lap awaiting her atten- tion. The theme interest has been | well developed The carbon photographs are efter classic subjects by masterful artists The engravings date from the eighteenth century, and there is an interesting Haeniggenge! lithograph of the Venus by TMlan, in the Dres- den Gallery. To the present Rand School show- ing, it is expected that further item will be added in the near future. 7 { WITH THE FINGERS Jeet teen eee. “Hard skin” or callus spots on the sides or bottom of the feet peel right off aia in or soreness, after you | | apply alittle reerone, says @ Cincin- nati authority.
