The Commercial Economy Board of The Council of National Defense has appealed to the distributory of merchandise to relieve every available man for service in the war. Stores employ small armies of men in delivery departments. MANY OF THESE MEN MUST BE RELIEVED FOR NATIONAL SERVICE. All should help minimize the work of delivery departments by carrying small packages to and from stores. All can thus set a patriotic example to others by carrying war time bundles. In all stores numbe: departments to correct c' s of men are employed in the delivery stomers’ errors in addresses. PLEASE BE SURE TO GIVE YOUR CORRECT ADDRESS AND ASK THE CLERK TO SHOW IT TO YOU AFTER IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN. Our records show that we deliver merchandise in different localities in New York and New Jersey; for example there are: 9 Fifth Avenues in New York and New Jersey. 13 Broadways in New York and New Jersey. 23 Madison Avenues in New York and New Jersey. Unless customers st ate plainly the city, borough or town in which they there is confusion in making deliveries. THIS COSTS MEN'S TIME It often happens that etstomers living in the numbered streets above 100th Street give the uptov ress as it is known colloquially in their district. For example, Mrs, Smith, who lives at 747 West 119th Street, gives her address as 747--19th Street. T is all right in the neighborhood, but downtown the clerk in the store takes her address literally. Result—A waste of delivery-men, live, People who give their downtown building addresses and neglect to state the office or room number, waste men's time. Last week, in a certain section of the city, there were offered for delivery 3,698 C. O. D. packages, of which 981 were returned for these reasons: 501 packages returned with the statement that they were not wanted, 420 packages returned because the customers were out. 60 To « of men who cc Think « changed t! at home to If yo at the door, ple is known packages returned because the addresses were wrong. ffer for delivery and bring back these 981 packages wasted the service uld othery se be spared for war industry. it over 500 packages returned by people who ordered goods and minds, Over 400 knew they had ordered goods, but were not e them.
