a * Nees Benny Leonard, Although Handi- capped by Bad Left Hand, Outclassed Frankie Callahan, but Latter Never Backed Up During Bout. Ml, a1 Publishing Oo, apy rignt, 107) trie N ening W RANKIE CALLAHAN Is a tough nut. He's hard to hurt. He stood up under an awful lacing handed out by Benny Leonard at the Clermont Avenue Rink last night and mever backed up. He was always aggressive and gamely trying to fin Leonard's weakness with a right haod that apparently carried a knockout. Leonard won unmistakably. He “out- levered” Callahan and really boxed rings around him at times, but there never was a time during the ten fas rounds when Callahan wasn't willing to wade into close quarters and whale away for general results. Leonard was plainiy handicapped 4 bad left hand and he took few nces with it, He used it to meas- Ure and study Callahan for a right ross, and occasionally Jjabbed his op- ment lightly to make him respect it, it he couldn't hook with the bad hand. When it ts remembered that Leonard's left hook is almost as good es his right, his performance with Callahan was really remarkwbie. Benny had all the speed necessary and his feinting and blocking Were enough to discourage a less hardy youngster than Callahan, Ger ae ‘took smashes on the jaw without number and only once or twice seemed to waver from their force. Right uppercuts snapped his head buck at intervals and inside drives to his chin made him appear outclassed, but nothing throughout the contest’ cast any re- flection on Callahan's gameness. More than once ringsiders got the Impression that he might have out- lasted Gibson's contender for light weight honors If the bout was over the Marathon distance. T long range fighting tast night Callahan had little chance with the speedier Leonard, but he did considerable damage when he got close, excepting when Leonard tied up his arms, He whaled aver at Benny's kidneys and had his spotted with red blotches when the final bell rang. Leonard pulled a Leach Cross stall ing act in the third round and for few seconds had his seconds guess ing. Benny evidently read thelr fears, reassuringly waved his gloved fist ai Billy Gibson and then tut loose at Callahan with a series of wallops that put the gam little fellow in a maze All told It was a very satisfactory mixup, entirely pleasing to a crowd |the most marvellous and amazing sort. victory and three defeats, that packed the club house, OXING promoters of New York don't intend to stand idly by and wee the Boxing law repealed without some protest.
