Bm Oh ie estes THE nvanine’ WORLD, TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1917. | GARMENT STRIKE NEARS END; 25,000 | Weltnahen Prem Press Demand for 48-Hour Week and 20 Per Cent. Increase. While Judge Mack, the mediator, hopes to effect a settlement of the war- ment strike thie afternoon, trouble is brewing in other branches of the clothing trade and several strikes are likely before the end of the week. Only an extraordinary effort by the manu- facturers to-night can prevent a strike of 25,000 waist makers, mostly women and giris. There 1# to be a conference at the Fifth Avenue bullding between Ben- Jamin Schlesinger of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union and the heads of the Manufacturers’ Asso- ciation. A general meeting of all the workets | in the trade has been called for ‘Thursday night at Cooper Union. “Conditions have not improved in this business,” said Mr. Schlesinger, “and the workers simply cannot stand it any longer. They want @ part this prosperity and are entitled to It.” The waist workers ate demanding 40-hour week and 20 per cent. increase in wages. Close to 10,000 white goods workers, 8,000 petticoat makers and 1,000 ladies’ neckwear workers are also agitated and threatening to etrike. They want the 48-hour week and from 10 to 20 per cent. Increase in wages. | Secession of what has been called the “progressive element” in the Dress and Waist Employers’ Assoola- tion is likely to increase the chances of a strike in the industry, though this was denied by the officers, Mrs. Henry Moskowitz and Julius H Yohen quit as advisers several we Judge Mack will tal and waist dispute as soon yas finished with the COL stomach. A little Lad oceasion- ally keeps the stomach regulated and they eat their favorite foods without fear. If your stomach doesn’t take care of your liberal limit without rebellion; if your food is a damage instead of a hefp, remember the quickest, surest, most harmless relief is Pape’s Diapep- sin, which costs only fifty cents for a large case at drug stores, It's truly wonderful—it digests food and sets things straight, so gently and easily that it is astonishing.
