| Miniatures on Ivory Shown At Montross Tt t@ @ oharming collection of ivory Miniatures that is now on exhibition until Nov, 18 at the Montroas Gajlory, No. 660 Fifth Avenue, The catalogue contains 194 numbers. ‘The range of excellence ie, however, very wite and exemplifies the varia- tion tn point of view on the part of the contributing miniature painters. Wittam J. Bacr sends a group of thirteen miniatures, including four exquisite nudes, which he paints so moely. Mr. Baer in these miniatures has expressed the acme of idealization. The ivory surface has been most admirably adapted to the portrayal of warm and glowing flesh tints. In connection with the fleshly portrayal the painter has introduced a tree, a landscape, the sky and drapery. Some of his portraits, notably those of feminine type with mahogany hair, Qre.also noteworthy, The miniatures by Lucia Fairehild are likewise highly pleasing in the résults she has been able taob- ‘Girt Dry Her Foot" and “Artemidora” partioularly happy aa interpretat: of the un- 4 female figure. The body lines and the pleasing attitudes assumed by the models have all been tnost warefully worked out. “The Old So- Claliet,” by the same artist, is a fine etudy of a male head, “Isaac L. Rice, Bag," by Elsie Dodge Patte, is an excellent study of a chess layin, thusiast busy with a prob- jem. essellated oliess board and the carved red and white chessmen ere admirably rendered, and the stu- diows quality of the player is weil se me background drapery good. “Helen,” by Alice Beckington, was Qwarded @ bronszo medal at the St. Louls Exposition in 1904. It is an in- teresting study of a girl in a blue kimono. The face is lilumined. Miss Beckingtons portrait of Bliss Carmen shows the poet in a characteristic 06. Katharine Vaughn Holden's por- trait, by Mabel Rt. Welch, is deserv- ing of special praise, both for its color @cheme and its composition, The evality o' ce is admirably ex- crewret crowned with wavy wo r. The neck and shoulder lines are beautiful, and the blue bow is a color note of much charm, Miss Welch's portrait of Earnest Elmo Calkins, showing this well known and popular advertising man in pro- file, also @ fine bit of miniature painting. Miss Welch still further shows how effectively the miniature painting May become when the landscape te ite inspiration, which ® a bit off the beaten track. Lydia Longacre, in her "The Bluo Kimono,” gives a fetching concep- Hon of a girl seated on a couch, in her boudoir attire, and who most’ at- tractively bolds a single cosmos bloom.
