vans Tete. __ ORR rrrrrr®, THE NEW PLAYS Washington Square Players Score in “The Clod.” BY CHARLES DARNTON N coming over to the Comedy Theatre last night the Washing-| ton Square Players made a dis- tinct impression in “The Clod," one of four one-act plays that comprised the bill. It was in this play that Mary Mor- ris dragged herself into first place as the poor, tired drudge house “on the borer line between bond North and South" during the Civil War. After light and rather ema- Wurieh work by other members ot| fhe company in more or jens amusing Sketches, Miss Morris cave « «rim, human performance that stamped her as an actress with a real sense of character. “The Clod,” by Lewis Beach, te the quest gripping short play that has given hers aince “The Black ." the dramatic Rorror of whioh was realized at the Prtnoess Theatre in the fine acting of Holbrook Blinn and Emily Polint. At once “The Clod" gets down to earth with ite “poor white trash”—helpless old Trask and his slaving wife. She asks for nothing but rest, She knows nothing but dull, grinding to!l. When a worn- out, fugitive Northern soldier makes his way into the house, she looks at him weartly and with the weight of weariness heavy upon her, merely says: “Don't faint in here.” The fugitive, aa acted by Glenn Hunter, makes so much noise In hid- Ing himself that he: deserves little consideration. Interest centres in poor, hardworking Mary Trask, and the brutal shock of the play ts’ felt when the pursuing sergeant takes her roughly by the arm, threatens her with his pistol, and then orders her to get him something to eat. Finally, when he files into @ rage because the meal is not to his liking and smashes @ cup on the floor, she eiezes @ shotgun and kills him. But there is a still greater dramatic mo- ment in the play. The woman has no sense of the tragedy she has worked. Dully, blind to the dead 6 stoops down, picks up @ bit broken china end looking at it, murmure: “And now we'll have to drink out of a tin cup.” That is all—the curtain comes down. From first to last Miss Morris was like @ dull, aching thing, conscious only of the toll that meant the wom- an’e life, day in and day out. John King succeeded in getting under the skin of the lame old husband, and although Robert Strange seemed un- necessarily brutal at times, he did ‘J dered of work in the role in “The Honorable Lover” the act- ing was not nearly 80 good as Ro- herto Bracco's clever Italian farce, Florence Enright was painfully af- fected and self-conscious as the wife whose lover, believing in safety first, compels her to keep her husband. It was Frank Conroy, as the cir- cumspect lover, who gave the only humorous touch to this little skit. A French farce of the fifteanth century, “Pierre Patelin,” became a wooden’ affair in the hands of the Washington Square Players, and| “Helena’s Husband,” a so-called his-| torical comedy, fared little better. However, certain indelicate means employed did not seem in the least to disturb Helon Westley, who was extremely frank and equally serviceable as the queen's black slave. It 1s “The Clod,” with Miss Mor-_ rise realistic acting, that justifies the Washington Square Players in venturing from the Bandbox to the Comedy Theatre.
