Fears for the safety of Bir Ernest Shackleton, lost for months to otvi- lization behind the ice barrier of the Antarctic, are set at rest by the above message. All the isiands of this chain are barren and mountainous, with no vegetation, except mosses and lichens. Then came tho briefly chronicled | It took eight davs for Sir Ernest, after he had his men ashore, to pre- pare for his desperate boat voyage. On April 24, with the days already growing shorter down there on tho Antarctic Circle and darkness and the ice closing in, he and his tive men set out. Shackleton headed for South Georgia, 850 miles northeast, where he had @ base and where be could get ip communication by wireless with the outside world and report the plight of his men. For thirty-seven days these six men navigated their small craft. Some- where on the voyage Sir Ernest dis- covered that gales or the circumpolar current, or both, were sweeping hin westward and he made for the Falk- lands, 700 miles by the most direct route from Elephant Island. As Sir Ernest set out at first for South Georgia he must have sailed 1,0v0 miles. The wonder is that the boat wa: le to survive, The last word received from bim, in February, 1915, in a message sent by wireless from the desolate island of South Georgia, which he had lected as his advanced base. It said: “You must not look for us until about the beginning of March, 1918, and then from New Zealand.” At the time that message was sent Shackleton was a year behind his schedule, owing to the unexampled lateness of the season and bad weather conditions. When he saile? from Liverpvol, Sept. 12, 1914, to join the Endurance at Buenos Ayres, Oct 26, of that same year, he had hoped to land on the shores of Weddell $ that same season (spring in aA aretic) and to start on his Journ goon as he could get what te ne ashore.
