ae ag rT APS NPR PE ae dt ee GIO —— i a ALL LL ILO EET Ai TS a sam nists If Lewis Goes Ten Rounds With Gibbons It Will Be Because Latter Is Not Trying. Conrrigit. 1010, by The Prem Publishing Co, (The New York Evening World.) IKE GIBBONS will give an- M other demonstration of his weil known skill to-night at Madi- @on Square Garden, Mike will have the greatest chance in the world to be the whole show. Gibbbons hag announced, during his training, that he is very anxious to polish up his somewhat tarnished New York reputation, and so will make as short work as possible of to-night’s opponent. If Mike ts sincere, Lewis will undoubtedly be assisted to his corner before the ien rounds are over. If Mike is merely helping the nimble press agent to promote public intér- est in the bout, it's very Ikely that Kid Lewis will still be wearing a wide, although not beautiful, smile when the tenth round ends, 'N my humble opinion Lewis doesn’t class with Gibbons in any way. He's @ second string welterweight boxing the best middleweight in the country—the cleverest fighting mid- dleweight turned out here since Tommy Ryan's day. Lewis became a second string welter when he was beaten by Jack Britton. Shortly be- fore that he was beaten by Mike Glover. There is no questioning either event. Glover got a twelve round decision over him in Boston. Britton won from. him in twenty rounds in New Orleans. Reports from the Southern city relate that Britton not only outpointed Lewis for the fret eighteen rounds, but when he had the decision cinched went in and mixed it furiously in the last two rounds in an attempt te knock the Englishman out. Brit- ton told me, when he came back from ‘New Orleans, that he didn’t consider the fight with Lewis one of his bard fights. TEIa' Lewia hae beaten a lot of good men, but few of his victims have failed to go through the number of rounds acheduled. His New York Teputation waa earned in a bout with Willie Ritchie. He gave Wille a fine trimming. Ritchie, however, wasn't at his best. He wasn't the lean, Mthe, sinewy Ritchie who whi Leach Cross on pens atadrtags af Conte ees i ‘olum! was taking up Were attention, and he didn't have the old interest in fight- ing. He had taken on weigl and hed lost some speed. The old “kick” wasn't in him. He rushed Lewis recklessly through ten rounds, trying to put over the punch he didn’t pos- ees, and Lewis avoided bia rushes and picked him to pieces in @ very workmanlike way. That doesn't argue that Lewis has any right to be classed with Mike Gibbons. Jack Britton laughs fighting Gibbon ye think Gibbons {ts the cleverest boxer in the world. He's the kingpin among fighters. He's in a class above me in weight. He'd beat me without any trouble.” yh candid on Jack's part. 3¢ Britton, who can beat Lewis, knows he wouldn't have a chance we | oto what chance can Lewis ve Mike GAdbons knocked out Young Ahearn, who ie a digger and much more dangerous fighter than Lewis, and fully as clever, He knocked out Ahearn in ninety seconds. J IMMY JOHNSTON, who runs the Garden and manages Lewis Professes to believe that Lewis @ good chance to outpoint Gib- bons. As nobody has ever yet ac- cused Johnston of being crazy, per- haps he's satisfied to let Lewis got whatever may come for one nice fat gate. Mike Gibbons is talking of fighting Jack Dillon, Apparently he seriously thinks he could beat the “man eater,” Dillon is one of the best fighting heavyweights we've had in this coun- try since Hob Fitzsimmons whipped Jim Corbett at Carson, nineteen years ago. 1 don't Mike would do any- thing to 1 and | suspect that Dillon might beat down Mike's guard and knock him into the next county With one of those w ping rights, But very likely Mike coud give Dillon 4 lively time of it while he lasted, Can one imagine Kid) Lewis ning about 140-145 pounds—hav- chance to even annoy Dillon? EVENING WORLD, THURSDAY, MAY 18 BEST SPORTING PAGE IN NEW YORK _ FAMILIAR FACES AT JAMAICA TO-DAY > Racing Gets Its Start To-Day at Jamaica Trac Under Best Condition Brand New Interest in Sport Due to More Millionaire Adherents. By Vincent Treanor. ORSE racing in New York be- gina to-day. The winter meet- ings bave had their inning! and the hunt clubs, too, have enjoyed profitable sessions, but not until to- day—May 18—has tho regular Jockey Club seayon got ite start. Ever since the allotment of dates for this season, racegoers have had this date in mind, and it’s hore finally. From now on racing, probably the best since 1910, will be seen here- aboute—until Sept. 9 Since 1913, racing has been more or less clouded. The anti legislation of 1910 chilled the enthusiasm of those who loved to seo a stirring finish with 4 wager on the side, To-day any- body and everybody who can estab- lish credit has the opportunity of sce- ing the thoroughbred race to the wire, with an accompanying wager without the risk of arrest and what may fol- low it. Racing to-day is in a more promis- ing condition than it has been for years, It has overcome the shaky stages and this afternoon at the Jamaica race track it takes its old place among the most trililing and blood-stirring of patimos. the number of high class millionaires connected with it, ‘This season moneyed men of the highest possible gtanding in the community have be- come associated with the sport, and colors that have never been seen heretofore will feature the paraders to the post in many big events, For instance, A. The word has gone forth that the passing of money will be the signal for arrest and all offenders will be paraded in front of the Pinkertons and barred from tho tracks for the rest of the year. The Jamaica track for to-day has never been in better shape. Hereto- foro six furlong workouts in 1.15 were | considered wonderful at this track. These days three-quareers in 1.14 are ordinary. OINCIDENTAL with the defeat of the Dodgers, which permitted the Braves to climb into @ tle for first place in the National League, the Giants at last have jumped out cf the cellar for the first time since the flag dropped in early April. Out In the open sunshine now McGraw's birds are picking their feathers, strut- ting around in general and wondering which way to start. They won't won- der long. It took seven straight victories on the road for the Giants to turn this trick, and if they win one more ‘t will be cloga to the record for con- secutive wing on foreign soll. They have vet to be beaten since leaving the Polo Grounds. Once they got in a winning stride, though, the Gtants have redoubled their efforts Instead of slackening. A fan who saw their games in Pitts- burgh declares that New Yorkers would never recognize the hard fight- ing, peppery gang as the club that outdid the original Joe Grim for tak- ing punishment at the Polo Ggounds, Having cleaned up both Pirates and Cubs they shot the props from under D at St. Louts with the first volly. Seeing first place in reach the Braves fought like a crowd of real Indians and won. They tapped the heretofore unbeatable Toney for a dozen safe wallops. In the meantime Tom Hughes, a former Yank, held Herzog’s teum to four bits and a sin- ele run, There is a big switch in the schedule to-day and the Tige are here to tackle the Yanks. Judging from the way Washing- ton treated Ty Cobb and his backers the fight should be easy for Bill Donovan, but baseball cannot be doped on past perform: ances. That crowd of Tiger slug- gers are about due for a clean- up, and it would be just our luck to have Cobb, Orawford, et ale. wake up at Yank expense, At last the Browns came through and won a game from the Athletics, making the permanent ownership of th. cellar a question of doubt. With Davenport in the box St. Louis took the measure of Crowell, Mack's new twirler. In the hearts of St. Louis betters hope has revived. Last week Connie turned Elmer Meyers, his new pitcher, on the boys three times and got away with it, That Meyers, by the way, {@ one of the most sensational youngsters of the season.
