As for the third missing man in the crime described by Onnie Talas, the self-confessed participant in the plot, as a “Wop,” the detectives have been able to learn very little, They have only a vague description of bim and they have not been able to find out where he lived or who his friends were. This is the status of the case three 18 STILL days after the tragedy. The detectives | think Talas is tellins them the truth, for the story of Edith Langfeldt, the maid in Mrs, Nichols's home, corrob- orates his statement that there were three men in the party that invaded the widow's apartment. Also the de- tectives have confirmation of Talas's description of Waltonen from other wervants in the Nichols house, who knew him well during his period of employment there, But all they know about the “Wop” and nearly all they know about “Eddie” has been told by Talas. No trace has been found of the diamond rings, the watch and the diamond chain the thieves took away with them. Talas says that neither he, Waltonen, “Eddie” or the “Wop” had any money. Talas says, further, that he thinks Waltonen had ar- rahged in advance to get rid of the! loot, Lt is well established that Wal- tonen had contemplated robbing Mra. Nichols for a long time, and Inspector Faurot suspects that the man left Mrs. Nichols's employ and recom- mended Talas to succeed him in pur- suance of a plan to execute the rob- bery. INSIDE AID WAS NECESSARY IN THE CRIME. Talas was necessary to the success of the plan, The Nichola home is but 4 ste from Fifth Avenne, Policemen abound in the neighborhood, there are private watchmen on every block and 4ll the houses in the vicinity are pro- tected by burglar alarms, Forcible en- try was dangerous, but with a fellow conspirator on the inside to open the door and stand for being bound, the rest was easy. Servant gossip that Mrs. Nichols kept jewels Valued at from $200,000 to $500,000 in a secret safe in her room wore disproved to-day when the safe, which was cunn@gly bjdden in window frame was opened, Ail it con- tained was a quantity of dusty pa- rs, In the apartment of the late Mr. Ichols another safe, concen.ed in the panelling of a closet was opened, The contents were of no value, Mrs. Nichols, on the night of the robbery, wore on her person all the jewelry she had in the house, There are no Indications in her rooms that the thieves tried to find the secret safe.
