400,000 MEN MAY JOIN GREAT STRIKE OF UNION TAILORS Garment Workers, United He- brew Trades and Cutters May Walk Out. CONCILIATION SOUGHT. Mayor Attempts to Prevent Great Tie-Up in the Needle Industry. ‘ c Wiitle leaders of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers’ Union were pre- paring to-day to call out 70,000 men's garment workers to join the 10,000 union pantsmakers who struck yes- terday Mayor Mitchel'’s Committee on Conciliation, appointed to arbitrate differences between the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union and the manufacturers, met in the City Hall, Little hope that a strike of all the men’s garment workers would be averted was held out by the officials of the Amalgamated Clothing Work- ers’ Union to-day. No offer to arbi- trate the differences came to the striking pantsmakers who walked out of 400 shops yesterday. It was de- @ared by Mayer Schoenfeld, labor ad- juster for the American Clothing Manufacturers’ Association, that the manufacturers had no proposition to offer. Fear that the strike will spread to the United Hebrew Trades, with a membership of 300,000, was expressed by the union leaders, who also de- clared that garment workers in other cities would join in the movement to bring about a general increase in ‘wages and a standardization of work- ing arrangements. 70,000 VEST MAKERS MAY JOIN IN GREAT STRIKE. Future action on the part of the 70,000 vest makers, coat makers, cut- ters and children's garment workers will depend upon mass meetings to be held to-morrow in various halls on No_ Exchanges. No_ Approvals, N AY Yi Zz Wy WW combination, dd YU whe section of Brooklyn. At these tings representatives of the striki ntsmakere will urge @ strike, They will point out that in the two yeers past reductions of from 25 to 46 per cent. in wages have been forced upon the workers in spite of the increased cost of living. Meetings of the pantsmakers held to-day were unusually decorous. The crowd of strikers who gathered in front of the Manhattan Lyceum at No, 66 Fourth Street was so large that an additional hall at No, 64 Fourth Street was secured and into this the strikers poured. Peace between the ladies’ garthent workers and the manufacturers is guaranteed for at least a month by the appointment of the Mayor's Con- ciliation Committee. When the unions and employees agreed to submit their differences to this body it was stip- ulated that the arbitrators must reach a decision within two weeks after the hearings end. MAYOR URGES COMMITTEE TO ACT QUICKLY. The urgency of quick action was impressed upon the members of the ommittee and the fifty-five union representatives by Mayor Mitchel to- day. Attorney Morris Hilquit, who rep- resents the workers, asked that all of the hearings be held in the open, and the Mayor gave the committee the use of the Aldermanic council rooms. Immediately after this the six mem- bers met in executive session to or- Banize. Dr. Felix Adler was selected Chair- man of the Committee and Dr. George W. Kirchwey of Columbia College Law School Secretary. The other members are Louis Brandeis, tho Boston attorney; City Chamberlain Henry Bruere, ex-Judge Walter C. Noyes of the United States Ciroult Court of Appeals and Charles Bernheimer, President of the Cham- ber of Commerce. The Committee will hold its first hearing to-morrow morning in the Aldermanic Council Rooms in tho City Hall, At the executive session Mayor Mitchel said that he expected the com- mittee to go fully into the differences threatening the needle industry and then to report thelr conclusions to him. NOT INVITED INTO CONFER. ENCES OF COMMITTEE. In connection with the Conciliation Committee's work it developed to- day that neither the manufacturers of mep’s and children’s garments nor the Amalgamated Clothing Workers’ Union had been invited to submit their differences to the committee, The differences between the Inter- national Ladies’ [AMMEYE STAMPED ON A SHOE MEANS STANDARD OF MERIT 6= AVE. Revised Plan Contemplates Expenditure of $6,000,000 Instead of $10,000,000. Despite the injunction proceedings begun yesterday to restrain the new Court-House Board from proceeding with its plans for a new Court-House, it was announced to-day that the Court House site and Civic Center will not be abandoned. The cost will be reduced from $10,000,000 to $6,000,000 ™ less and the site made smaller, so that the city may later sell some of! the property. ‘The announcement was made follow- ing a meeting of Mayor Mitcho'l, Comptroller Prendergast, McAneny of the Board of Aldermen |} and President Pounds of bent gall f Borough, representing the Board of | Estimate, with the representatives of | the Advisory Council of real estate in- terests in the new Court Houge pro- Ject.
