A woman I is —well, if presents must be made to the ladies, why should I not make them aa well as he?” CHAPTER XI. RRIVED at his own jomo, Count Frederick of Gretz- hoffen found a little pile of unopened letters waiting for him and picked up one bearing the crest of Count Sachio of Grahoffen, a man he had known for many years and with whom, if truth be told, he had had certain plans T/ which neither would have cared to have come into public knowledge. Rare Japanese Color Prints at Art Museum mn The Samuel Isham gift of Japanese color prints at the Metropolitan Mu- seum is now arranged. The 236 ex- amples of Japanese work, Tl Po chromoxylography, have stalled in one of the small alterle of the museum, These prints constitute a well-ee- lected group, many of which are of historic as well as art interest. With but a single exception all of the Ukiyoe artists are represented, Moronobu js represented by geven ink prints of ws of the Yoshiwara, One ‘ot these is hand- colored. An extremely rare example of an thon,” or folding album, is the work of Okumura Toshinobu. A fine Urushi-ye, the so-called lac- quer print, by Nishikawa Yoshinobu, is another rarity. Torii Kiyomasu and Torii Kiyo- nobu are represented by twelve two- color prints, in pale rose and green, that are particularly charming. There are two hand-colored print by Torii Kiyotada, that are not only very rr but are exceptionally beau- tiful examples of that artist's work. A pillar print, by Torii Kiyomitsu, dealing with an agtor, is of distin- guished quality, It is one of five by this artist. Among nine prints by Eishi are ‘o of his finest triptychs. Toyokuni is represented by two prints only, but one ts a large noteworthy head of an actor, the other Is one of his best triptych: dealing ith a street scene in the Yoshiwari There are thirty-nine Utamaros, Hokusal appears in a few example: There are half a doten Hiroshiges, an unusually fine triptych by Elzan and one by Kiyomine, which is an ink impression from the key block. Notable objects, shown for the first time, among the recent accessions, included a couple of trencher galta in pewter. One of these was triangular e. with an exceedingly pleas- ing bordered decoration, and the other was a more ordinary rounded form. There were a number of sli battles. On one of there an American eagle was | the head of Washington on the other. Another of these bottles was a win ter-summer type. The one side-of the flass showed a tree, in full foliage, and upon the reverse aide the tree, entirely denuded, was blown in the L Sd An eagle and a fing were thi jecorations on a bottle made at Ken- sington, Pa., and a flask, without bellishment, dated from the eighteenth century. here were two examples of Chines roof tiles, done in pottery of the Ming Period; a Persian bottle of the seven- teenth century, decorated in delicate blue; a Persian tile of the twelftl or thirteenth century, several Persian wall tiles and certain Persian bro- cades. A petit arn ee the seventeenth dentury, in a contem- porary frame, was a very interesting showing. Announcement was made of the! election of Charles W. Gould as a trustes of the museum, to fill vacancy in the class of 1917 CASTORIA||= For Infants and Children In Use FoR OVER 30 YEARS a bears late AMUSEMENTS. Phew oalh it ERD @ STEEPLECHASE (LT!
