‘ pocrites”’ Shown| Motion Pictures | 1¢ Longacre Theatre ¥ ‘ OWN elaborate film spectacie called “Hypocrites” was produced last night at the Longacre The- etre, Truth at any cost of clothes ‘dppeared to be the purpose of the @uthor, Lois Weber, who, in her fan- eiful way, had fashioned a simple yet Ghaste story. Like other plays of the year “Hypocrites” was largely dream. To begin with, an elocutionary gen- teman in ecclesiastical garb deliv- @reé a brief sermon on hypocrisy and@ then fell asleep. And in that leep, as Shakespeare didn't say, what dreams did come! The good man saw himself as an early monk at work upou a etatue of Truth—and mean- while the audience waited for results. ‘When Truth was unvetied the inspired artist was killed because the naked ‘Truth shocked the amateur art crit- ics. The real truth is that Truth, in the beginning, was white-washed, and thie may eerve to explain the indigna- tion of the murderous populace. As & matter of fact, it wasn't a bad job at all, except that it betrayed a mid- ‘Victorian suggestion of the original member of the Original English Pony Ballet. (This, of course, from a pure- ly personal point of view). Truth came to light again after a few thou- sand years and led the monk, now the pastor of a modern church, together with his congregation, along the straight and dificult path upward, ever upward, and over such pitfalls as @ociety and politics, An obvious lesson for hypocrites was silently preached all along the ling, and in the end the preacher died “unfortunately with a Sunday newspaper in his hand,” as the announcement on the sereen humorously put it. S In all seriousness, Courtenay Foote made an impressive and dramatic fig- ure as the monk, while Margaret Ed- wards, quite innocent of clothes, side- sieaend charmingly as Truth. {tis a Bare, Dossibility that the producer, L. Sherry, believes Truth we de a revelation to Broadway. In event Truth is quite out of the so far as clothes go. A very food orchestra played a musical ac- Semmpent ment to the scenes and a rus sang to the best of its ability. The exhibition opened with a series of really fine pictures of the North- ‘weet entitled “The Call of the Moun- tains.” — Not only wero tho scenic glories of Oregon brought out vividly, but the dangers and sports of the mountains were realized in pictures of adventurers shooting and tumbling down Nature's toboggan slide; horses, mules and dogs fording streams gone. in thelr downward plunge, and other exciting views. These moun- tain pictures are living works of art. phe hes ld Baker Kills Self With Rasor.
