» .Two songs usical Art ~ By Sylvester Rawling. NE of the best two fixtures of the annual music season in Now York passed last night with the Christmas concert of the Musical Art Soclety at Carnegie Hall, Ponducted now, as when he organized it twenty-two years ago, by Dr. Frank Damrosch. The other js left for our enjoyment on March 11, when the Easter concert of the society will be Given. Amid ait the fuss and feath- fs Of six months of opera and con- certs, these two offerings of the lofty music of the Church In the Middle Ages stand out unrivalled for sheer beauty of content and skill in pro- Proud of the axset it has in this organization, and a house crowded from top to bottom showed that it Is Rot unmindful of its possession. That beautiful German hymn “Holy Night” (not on the programme be- cause it isn’t necessary--we know it will be sung to us) was the opening number. Then the sdéventy singers @eparated into three choirs to sing Palestrina’s noble “Salve Regina - followed by the Christen ‘mn “Joseph, Lieber Joseph Moin” by Calvisius. ft accompaniment for which, founded on an old German chorale, Walter Damrosch has transcribed for mixed voices. Following that was Heinrich Schutz's setting of the) XCVIII. psalm, “Sing to the Lord a New Song.” part of the programme consisted of Bach's “Actus Tragicus,” & cantata in which an orchestra from | the Symphony Society took part, and | in which George Barrere more | showed his pre-eminence a fi ist. Returning to the form in part three, Brahms's * Und Gedenksprueche,” two madrigals by Monteverde, E serenade “Dreams all too brief’ and Leopold Damrosch's “Ring out, wild bells,” .@n admirable setting to music Tennyson's poem, with which we are familiar, were sung. If it were not for a recent rehearing of Elgar's beautiful “Dream of Ge tlus,” this latest effort of the E lish composer, “Dreams all too bri would be a surprise. As it is, fresh admiration must arise for him. It 1s an exquisite composition, worthy of association with any work of Pa trina’s, and, while quite as cha more colorful. Dr. Damrosch forced by the audience to repent it. In this, and throughout the pro- ‘amme, the choir bore itself wor- ly, displaying fine tone, admirable lance and exquisite modulation. The historical and d ptive pro- imme notes by Mr. Krehbiel were teresting as they were instruc- tH “In the intimacy of the Little The- atre yesterday afternoon Clara - Drilowitech, Mark Twain's daughter, sang to much better advantage than when she assisted her husband, the fenowned pianist, in Aeolian Hall tho “other day. In Schuman mann” and in Brahms ser Wird Meir Schlummer” especially she showed ti sentiment and art But Mme. pwitsch’s voice has Hmitations both in quantity and qual- ity and she would better avoid such fonge as Sch ‘s "Die Alimacht” and Mra, Bea e Year's at the Spring.” Mrs. Gabrilowitsch had the assistance of her husband as her ac- companist at the piano, a treat in it self, which the audience was e to acknowledge, Two of his “songs were sung by his wife, gongs well worth hearing—"Die W serfahrt” and “Nahe Des Geliebten.
