NE of the best two fixtures of the annual music season in Now York passed last night with the Christmas concert of the Musical Art Soclety at Carnegie Hall, Ponducted now, as when he organized it twenty-two years ago, by Dr. Frank Damrosch. Following that was Heinrich Schutz's setting of the) XCVIII. psalm, “Sing to the Lord a New Song.” part of the programme consisted of Bach's “Actus Tragicus,” & cantata in which an orchestra from | the Symphony Society took part, and | in which George Barrere more | showed his pre-eminence a fi ist. Returning to the form in part three, Brahms's * Und Gedenksprueche,” two madrigals by Monteverde, E serenade “Dreams all too brief’ and Leopold Damrosch's “Ring out, wild bells,” .@n admirable setting to music Tennyson's poem, with which we are familiar, were sung. If it were not for a recent rehearing of Elgar's beautiful “Dream of Ge tlus,” this latest effort of the E lish composer, “Dreams all too bri would be a surprise. As it is, fresh admiration must arise for him. It 1s an exquisite composition, worthy of association with any work of Pa trina’s, and, while quite as cha more colorful. Dr. Damrosch forced by the audience to repent it. In this, and throughout the pro- ‘amme, the choir bore itself wor- ly, displaying fine tone, admirable lance and exquisite modulation.
