The original estimate placed the not lone at $5,000,000, It was discov. ered to-day that hundreds of thow | sands of dollars worth of Instrumente, machinery and materials supposedly destroyed had been salvaged during the fire and removed to places of safety. Particularly was this the case in Mr. Edison's laboratory. Mr, Hutchinson places the total lows at between $1,000,000 and $760,000, ‘The 2,600 employees who were thrown out of employment by the blaze will ba back at work within a month. Mr. Edison carried hin own Insurance be- cause of the high rates demanded by the insurance companies. Juat sixteen hours after the fire started Mr. Edison had entered into a contract with the Moyer Construc- tion Company for rebuilding the part of the plant that was destroyed. With this off his mind, Mr. Edison, who had watched his great industries burn and had remained up adi night in consultation with his managers, went to bed for “a couple of hours’ aleep.” “rll have to start all over again in that part of the plant,” he sald “but its never too late to make a good start, and It won't be fl tong until we'll be in full swing again, 1 took a gambler'a chance on | the Insurance and my loss is heavy. However, there will be no lack of "| money for rebuilding.” Superintendents Nicolat and Hart had 400 men at work clearing up the ruins at daylight. Additional gangs were put on as the debris cooled. NO BUILDING 18 FIREPROOF AGAINST FILMS. Yesterday's fire showed that it utterly impoasible to construct abso- jlutely fireproof buildings for the, ‘storage and manufacture of moving picture films and photograpic and | phonograph mupplies. The founda- | tlon of moving picture films ts cella- lolse, which is virtually guncotton. Films and film materials made a white hot blaze that virtually melted | the concrete walls and partitions of the Edison buildings, ‘The moving ploture building in which all of the Edison photo-plays were eon- structed and which contained filma, cameras and motion picture apparatus of great value, was destroyed, not a single thing being saved of all its con- tents. The storage building of the chemical works practically blew to pieces when the fire came in contact with the hun- dreds of pounds of chemicals stored there. The other buildings destroyed in- cluded the plants of the Bates Num- bering Machine Company, the Bdison Diamond Disk Phonograph Works, the Edison Phonograph Cylinder Works, the Edison Primary Battery Works and tbe Blue Amberol Phonograph Works. EDISON'S CHIEF CONCERN WAS OVER LABORATORY. Edison's first concern was for his laboratory, where scientific machinery of great value is installed, and which contains all the Edison patents and the records of all his work. Lapse kept more than a dozen streams of water port | on this building, while others carried out all its contents and stored them in the storage bi building across Lakeside Avenu Hesides the firemen connected with the plant, the fire departments of Orange, West Orange, Bloomfeld, Montclair, Newark and South Orange were called to fight the fames, More than 12,000 people gathered near the Liewellyn Park, makes his home and to contain more wealth per judged by the wealth of the men “whe country, was deserted. aires engaged in @ dozen diterent industries sought out Filson, to (enastend his hand and express their SPECTATORS AID FIREMEN DUR- ING NIGHT.
