“‘Gerontius”’ At Oratorio’s First Concert By Sylvester Rawling. WR EDWARD HERAIAR'S “The Dream of Gerontius,” the in- spiration for which the composer found in Cardinal Newman's poem, was sung last night at Carnegie Hull by the Oratorio Society under the direction of Louis Koemmenich. The soloists were Mildred Potter, con- tralto; Gervase Elwes, tenor, and Frank Croxton, bass, The orchestra was that of the Symphony Society and the organist was Frank Sealy. There was an audience of consider- able » the attitude of which may be described as reverential. True, to each of the soloists, and to Mr. Koemmenich and to the chorus, ap- J. plause, well deserved, was given, but it was restrained. Something like the “Parsifal” spirit prevailed. Memory is treacherous, but when tho cantata got its first public presenta- ton in this city, nearly a dozen years ago, by the Oratorio Society, then un- Ger the direction of Dr. Frank Dam- rosch, the beauty of t') music and the skill of the composer seemed all of which the audience was thinking. it was a remarkable night for Mr. Elgar—he had not bee knighted then, for following close upon the ad- miration his work had aroused in Germany came American apprecia- tion and, thanks to h nelish music, long a negligible thing, once more found a place in the sun. Since then the work has been sung all over the world, six times now by our own Oratorio Society, and it needs no. detailed analysis, One thing is more apparent than ever—the debt of Elgar to the actual music and ritual of the Catholic Church in the building up of his ‘This, how- ever, is not to detract from the cx poser's sound musicianship, or the splendid orchestration, or the beauty of the whole conception. Mr. Elwes has sung Gerontius so many times, in so many places, and is so identified with the character that he was brought over from Eng- Jand to sing it. His work was ad- mirable. Frank Croxton's was got less worthy. As for Mildred Pottér, ‘ it may be doubted that she has ever % sung in more lovely voice, or with such grace of expression. The chorus had fine tonal quality and balance, re- fiecting credit upon Mr. Koemmen- ich's traiming. Mr. Freyer's programme included compo- sitions by Haydn, Beethoven id Chopin in which he showed taste and ability. His playing of the Cesar Franck prelude, chorale and fugue was especially good. Mr. Maitiand's songs included a Schubert group. en SWERT THING IN CIGARS, (From the Canliff Werte Mail.) Dean Shadrach Pryse of St. Asaph (ance @ familiar figure in South Wales) ssionately fond of the weed, and always smoked a pipe. One of the beat stories he used to tell was one which was against himeelf. On one occasion he visited a town where a church ba- maar was being held, and in the rail- way carriage realized that he had left his pipe at home. At the bazaar he was asked by a young lady “to buy some cigars.” He complied, and promptly tucked the package he recelved into his pocket, On leaving the bazaar he set off on a four-mile walk to visit a clergyman tn a neighboring village.
