Unique Punch and t Indy Theatre Opens With Disappointing Comedy By CHARLES DARNTON. F the new Punch and Judy theatre in Forty-nintn street opened last night without a “punch,” so far as the itself easily took its place as New Play was concerned, the little house York's most unique theatre, thanks to| Charles Hopkins, whose happy fancy led him to put decidedly odd architectu- ral plans into execution. Hard old Punch and good old Judy, painted on the walls outside and glimmering in the highly colored windows, seemed to have risen from the dust of road Broadway. and hurrying us on. je banners to the aristocracy of art as it 1s practised along ‘e went in with a troop of childish fancies tagging at our heels Then we turned to the right or left, instinctively duck- ing our heads (though there was no reason for it) and found ourselves in the strangest place on the theatrical map. Straight across the house stretched high-backed benches, apparently, like so many pews. These proved, however, to be equipped with folding orchestra chairs—design giving way to comfort. We felt rather funny aitting there, but we probably didn’t look near!: funny as the men and women in the queer wooden boxes at the rear and sid of the house. many Punc rather than ntertained. Any two With only their heads and necks showing they suggested eo i Judies in evening dress who were there to entertain of them might have made the hit of the night by living up to their elevated box, which resbmbled nothing so much as the traditional Punch and Judy booth. It was all very quaint, down to the boy-ushers in their full-skirted coats In every detatl the theatre established itself at once as a complete of blue. novelty. But the play proved to be quite an- other story. The best I can say of it is that “The Marriage of Columbine” fitted into the frame that the theatre gave it, a fact due to the admirable manner in which it was staged by Lionel Belmore. Even Belasco could not have done more for it. Further- more, the acting was excellent. The trouble was that the inept comedy did nothing to help matters along. And we do demand.a play when we go to the theatre, don't we? Childish as we may be in our love of a new toy, we are a rather hard lot when it comes to the last test of the thea-/ 11) tre. If the playwright dosen't suo- ceed in interesting or pleasing us, we are more than ready to turn our backs on him at the end of the evening. It strikes me that “The Marriage of Columbine” is just the sort of thing that @ theatrical society might offer its friends on an off-night or a drowsy afternoon, Harold C! has taken four acts to tell that might be told in one way it is @ simple atory of circus folk who innocently live their own lives without moral compunctions. To make it seem innacent the charac- ters are all puppets—nothing more. At the same time I cannot honestly accept Mr. Chapin as a supormoralist who seeks to prove it is true feeling that makes marriage the blessed state it is supposed to be. The fact that Columbine is the mother of be | three children makes me doubt that she, at the age of twenty-two, could be quite blind to the meaning of a marriage certificate. Even in 1860, or thereabouts—espe- cially in England—eircus people could not have grown up in the ignorance that Columbine apt es, and though Mr. Chapin may pl the cause of fantasy he knocks his whole imagin- rig acheme in ea head by bringing OManoman walnut.
