1 FAOORER SEDOFE BARNES DECLARES ANSWER OF T. R. AD VLAN * Col. Roosevelt's complaint in the libel suit, brought against him by Republican State Chairman William Barnes jr. is an “additional OST HS. LEN NORTH POLE QUEST Headed Expedition Sanctioned by Czar of Russia in 1911 and Died on the March. LONDON, Sept. 1.—A St. Peters- burg despatch to the Reuter Tele- @ram Company reports that surviv- ing members of the Arctic expedi- tion headed by Lieut. Sedoff, which left for the north in 1913, have ar- rived at Archangel. ‘The survivors stated that Sedoff @ied in a vain attempt to reach the North Pole. The expedition win- tered in 1912 and 1913 in newly dis- Covered territory and later Sedoff Proceeded to Franz Josef Land, ‘whence he started for the Pole, ac- companipd by two sailors. The leader fell ill on the way and died. The Russian Government sent an @xpedition to the relief of Lieut. Se- Goff early in 1914, and {t is probable that this expedition effected the res- oue of the explorer. According to Lieut, Sedoff’s plans the expedition, on reaching Franz Josef Land, was to divide itself in two parts at the beginning of 1913. The polar party, consisting of the lieutenant and two eompanions, was to make a dash for the Pole while the other members re- mained at winter quarters to carry on scientific work. ‘The first subscription to defray the expenses of the expedition was given Emperor Nicholas and was for 000. Lieut. Sedoff hns been cred- ited with the novel idea of using r bears as draught animals for Bis sledges. ny - BODY OF YOUNG WOMAN RICHLY DRESSED FOUND FLOATING IN CHANNEL Wore Black’ Satin Coat, Dia- mond Pins and String of Black Jet Beads. The body of a young Woman wear- ing a satin cloak of the latest French design was found floating in the ship channel off Quarantine Pier at Rosebank, Staten Island, early to-day. A fisherman, Peter McDermott of Fort Wadsworth, crossing the chan- nel in a power boat, came upon the body and towed it to the Quarantine pier, whence Coroner Vail sent it to McGinley's morgue for an autopsy by Coroner's Physician Mord. Dr. Mord found that the woman had been.drowned and in his opinion her body had been in the water less than twenty-four hours. He thought she ‘was about thirty-five years old, though others who saw the body said she must have been much younger. There was a gold capped tooth on the right side of the upper jaw. The woman was five feet seven inches in height and had beautifully chiselled features and a mass of jet black bair and a slender figure. She wore a washable gown of black and black silk stockings and black In her dress were small Pp circle pin and two bar pins, all set She wore a GENUINE MIZZZ, >> <4 N ‘9 *To-Day gad To-Morrow on, Neat ee at 12 YOU MUST BRING THIS ADVERTISEMENT WITH YOU CHARLES A.
