“WAL STET Market closing—A vigorous raid in late afternoon caused a sharp decline all around, but buying on break was better than selling and prices showed ‘fan inclination to rally. The large in- terests did not show an inclination to force a recovery. New York Central fell to 836-8, low- est in a generation, but it afterward allied pretty well and in the opinion of clone observers was in an over- gold condition. Predictions of break in American Telephone and Telegraph were not ful- filled and Chesapeake and Ohio Showed notable firmness. Union Pac- ific acted well and Southern Pacific also gave good account of itself. Mar- ket rallied at the close. Opening was generally low, partly on account of the threat of a big rail- Toad strike. Baltimore and Ohio was weak on fear that floating supply will be increased by distribution of the Union Pacific holdings, which would have a depressing influence on Market for that issue. There was @ display of strength after opening, Ddut stocks were supplied on advance. ‘Westinghouse sold up to 791-4, a new bigh recor Renewed pressure on New Haven caused a decline to 49 3-4 in early afternoon, and general list wold off. ‘The Closing Quotations.
