Berk- man had to cease speaking till the storm of applause subsided. He had opened the meeting, decfaring: “We here to honor our dead@———————————————————— ists, Rockefeller and his agents. There are two presumptions as to _ BROOKLYN. R. H. PO. how these men met death. One ts that they were the victims of the capitalists and their agents; another Is that they manufactured the bomb themselves to be used. “It Is the fault of the capitalists 1¢ they did manufacture that bomb, and I want to go on record that if they did do so then they were going to une it. “We are ready to do anything and everything In demand of our rights. I believe in resistance and all the results therefrom. ‘These men were murdehred in the cause of humanity. “As 1 said before, Rocket his class would stop at nothing. them it would mean only & few more cold blooded murders to their credit.” WORDS THAT BERKMAN MAY LATER REGRET. Then Berkman, who had the crowd hanging on his words, turned his at- tention to the police berating them for their compulsion of the cremation of Caron, Berg and Hanson and their refusal to permit a funeral parade or fo allow a display of the funeral urn loaded with the ashes of the dead “Reds.” Chief Inspector Schmittberger, who had lstened from the balcony of the cottage in the north end of the park, | commented as Berkman finished: “That speech was pretty hot stuff, Of course 1 won't take any action now unless it should be absolutely neces- sary, but there are stenographers in the crowd and this will be a case for warrants later.” Deputy Police Commissioner Rubin, Inspector Faurot and more than one hundred detectives heard Berkman's boasts and threats, but made no move to check him. “ET am anxious above all else ty avold trouble,” Commissioner Woods had sald, “You wil hear yourselves | > Hummel, Ib. This was learned ‘by an Evening World reporter to-day and brought to the attention of the District-Attomey.
