The great victory was chiefly due to the inspiring work of her plucky little Irish stroke, Mc- Carthy. It was “Mac” who restored to the men of Morningside the aquatic crown won on the same course nine-; teea years ago and wrested away in 1806. Gweet was Columbia's decisive tri- umph, after a terrific battle from Krum Elbow down the glistening waterway, especially the great strus- gle in the last mile, but bitter-sweet, the slipping of the shining prow of Penasyivania into second position— muck maligned tholepins, sem!-Eng- lish rigging and all. It was bitter in that !t was so heart-breakingly near @ victory; sweet in that it meant the revival of the long dormant sweep ewinging prowess of the Quakers. R “old boys” whose ages total 20 years felt so spry in the New York Athletic Club’s golf cham- ‘onship at Fox Hills that they went “out in the same round and each re- turned with a leading score, a feat that’s probably never been duplicated in golf or any other sport before. The honor of creating this unique record falls to James D. Foot, sixty- four years old, who made a score of 78; J. G. Batterson, fifty-eight y of age, who returned a 78 card; A Spotford, sixty years, who got an 41, and 8. McHie, fifty-two, who came bome with an 81 count. ‘There are thousands of young golf- ers who would feel immensely proud if they could play the game these veterans did in the N. Y. A. I saw them at a dis- tance whale away at the ‘ball and watched it stop within ten feet of the hole. It wad a big surprise to me the way they could control that little bail over such a vast course, and I said to my friends in amazement that Where must he something to the game that I had previously ridiculed. 1 announced that on reaching New York I intended buying a set of clubs, At the golf store I met Walter J, ars | from the rowing crew—and beaten, too, by an eight coached by a jolly Englishman whose methods had come in for constant criticism and at times even for outspoken contempt—the Ithacans might well have weloomed @ position even further down the line or the excuse that actual swamping might have furnished. Back in the second division—mak- ing a race in itself in that last mile— toiled the giants of Washington, the crew from Seattle rowing without form or finish of the first class, wast- ing its undoubted power at every dip of the blades. Here, too, drove along the pets of Jim Ten Eyck, themselves the champions but one short year ago. The men from the Sait City, in one last despairing effort, slid into fourth place, length upon length be- hind the toiling Cornellians, just the wink of an eye or av in advance of Washington. Oarsmen of to-day, of the past and of the future, and their families and friends, filled the dusty, moving grand stand, It was a jolly crowd and a waterwise one. A length or close to it marked the supremacy of Columbia over Pennsy Vania, while the Quakers shot their slippery shell into port about half a length ahead of Cornell.
