WILL GO AND GET IT, | £1 THE EVENING WORLD, FRIDAY, JUNE 56, 1014. SEES NEW YORK AGAIN {2 AT 82, AFTER 7 YEAR| UNS ASS AS STRANGER Lord Bvecsiey ‘Thi Thinks Round] Trip on Aquitania Will Crown His Riedl oon As the big Cunarder Aquitanta steamed up the Bay and the North River to-day there was a passenger aboard who looked with speechless amazement at the sun kissed tips of the skyscrapers, It was his first view of New York in forty-seven years, and he searched in vain for a landmark he could recognize, ‘The visitor is Lord Eversiey of Win- chester, England, who ts eighty-two years old and as active and observ- ing as a man of fifty. He came across the ocean on the Aquitania simply for the experience. He wanted to ride on the newest ship and he wanted to seo New York again. He will re. turn on the Aquitania next Wednes- , day. | Before he became a peer Lord Ev- ersley served thirty-three years in the | House of Commons as George Shaw- Lefevre, He was a member of the House during the civil war and was @ staunch friend of the Union throughout that crisis. His was one of the few voices raised in emphatic Protest when England permitted the privateer Alabama to prey on the commerce of the North. “This is my third visit to New York,” eaid Lord Eversiey. “I came bere first in 1853 on the Niagara of the {Cunard Line, a 5,000-ton sidewheeler. She could be stored away on one of the decks of this vessel without tak- ing up too much room. On that trip I was the guest of Samuel Cunard, the founder of the Cunard Line. “My second visit to New York was paid in 1867, I came across on the Cuba of the Cunard line. We made the trip in twelve days, which was very good time considering the limi- tations of steam navigation at that period. “I remember very well how New York looked in 1867. It was a lively, bustling place, of course. There nothing 1 can see that reminds me of the New York I knew then. These mountains of steel and stone and brick have completely altered the as- pect of this part of the country. “I suppose | shall be quite lost ashore. in my time I have geome very dear friends in America, They are all dead. I am landing almost a total stranger. “I knew Charles Sumner, Longtel- low, ay er Emerson, James Russell eu, Charles A.
