Edward Burns, senior vice-president and a director of the American Ex- change National Bank, No. 128 Broad- way, dropped dead at his desk at 10 o'clock this morning of heart failure. | He was sixty-eight years old and had been ailing since the death of his wife, two years ago. Although he knew his heart was af- fected, Mr. Burns had not anticipated that be was|in immediate danger of bee death. He reached his office at 9.0 o'clock and the end came as he was sorting out bis mail. Mr. Burns entered the correspond- ence department of the Americcan Exchange Bank on June 1, 1865. He worked his way up to the position of cashier on Dec. 23, 1881, and occupied the cashiers office until Jan. 11, 1910, when he was) made Vice-President. He had been elected a director of the bank two years previously. The memory of Mr. Burns was considered one of the phenomena of the financial district. His knowledge of signatures was infallible, and it was sald of him that at the close of & business day he knew the balance of every depositor to a penny.
