~ HUSKY FIGHTERS if cants for Enlistment Brings * .ARMY TAKES THE MosrT.| . Ninety-five Enlisted for Land Service as Against Twenty- \. two in Navy. af Figures given out to-day by officers at the two principal recruiting sta- tions for the army and navy in New York shew that since Monday 1,010 men have applied there for onlistment. ‘These figures do not include appli- : cants who offered themselves at the ) recruiting offices in Brooklyn, Jersey Clty and Hoboken, which are within the Jutisdiction of the New York re- cruiting district. Of those who have applied at the main navy station, No, 153 Weat Twenty-third street, since the first of | the week, but twenty-two have been accepted, while at the army office, No. 2% Third avenue, ninety-five of the applicants were accepted and sent to Fort Siocum for uniforms, equipment and first training. — At the army recruiting station the) number of those who want to enlist \ shows no sign of diminishing. More than fifty men were examined to-day : before the office had been opened & two hours. At the navy station, how- i) ever, the rush of recruits that began 7 Monday has fallen off considerably. Bat the fact that yesterday eleven of the 145 applicants were accepted, in comparison withthe five and six ac- cepted on Monday’ and Tucsday, 1s considered gratifying by the officers at the station, who belleve that a better class of recruits is making ap- Plication now than was the case in the firat wate of patriotic enthusiasm. Commander Casey B. Morgan, in charge of the navy station, and Major R. C. Cruxton, at the army office, are expecting orders from Washington authorizing increases in both branches of the service above peace strength. One of those who enlisted at the navy atation to-day was Edmund J. ‘Ridings of No. 635 West Fifty-ninth atreet who was honorably discharged from the navy in 1881, Ridings was @ seaman on the flagship Trenton of the fleet which was stationed in for- eign waters during the Russian- Turkish war. Ridings, who is fifty-! two years old, gave up a good posi- tion to re-enlist in the navy, but sald Rigid Examination of Appli- r Better Class of Men.
