ahi ¥ a} ’ aS RELIEF FUND ESTED TO PAY FOR BRAIN A BULKHEAD Committee's Reply to Charge . Of:Refising: to Give Aid . ‘in ‘individual Cases, Mayer George W. Elliott of Sea- bright, N. Treasurer of the com- mittes to the dwellers of “The Bisbery,” the part of the town worst damaged by the recent storms, has had the stricken stretch of beach @urveyed and reported to-day that the beach to be protected does not venesed 760 feet in length. The work can be done, it is believed, within $10,000, the amount for which tho committees ie asking. More than half has already been subscribed. The committee ig awaiting the opinion of experts as to whether a bulkhead or @ pair of jetties will beat serve the purpose. The fear of some citizens that another storm may come along and sweep the whole town off the map has made them nervous and has sub- jected the committee to some criti-| clam which its members feel ts un- warranted. P. Hall Packer, @ real estate and insurance broker, was quoted in The Evening World on Menday as saying that a mass-meet- ing\would probably be called to pro- test against the action of the com- inittee in disrogarding pleas for in- dividual reitef. Mr. Packer cited as one instance the case of Mrs. Alico Newman who, he said, had asked for $20 with which te put temporary piling under her Beme in the second storm. Mr. Packer said to-day that he was in error in this case and that Mrs. New- man had merely suggested wu loan through a third person and had not applied directly to the committee or any of the charitable societies. As to hig other remarks the committee says in substance in a statement sent to The Evening World: “The interview ts a serious mis- representation of the object of the Seabright Rellef Fund and a slander on the committeo chosen to solicit and apply this fund. The eneral understanding was that this money) should not be used for indiscriminate relief, but for the specific purpose of erecting a bulkhead across a nection of the town known as ‘The Fishery.’ Until this is done the town is exposed to w repetition of disasters more seri- ous than those of the recent storms. hermore until the bulkhead ts it it is utterly imporsible to re- store the homes of those who have lost them. As to personal suffering on the part of either individuals or families, there is none. Food anu clothing have been generously dis- tributed and all necessary temporary financial relief given. There is an abundance of work for all who want it.” ‘The co) ittee ataten that criticiam has ma iné collection of funds more diMcult and delayed the essen- tinl permanent relief of protecting “The Fishery” from the sea.
