THE BVENING WORLD, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, ‘‘Masked Ball’’ Well Presented At Metropolitan Revival of Verdi’s Opera, With a Big Cast, a Fine Ensemble and Beauti- ful Stage Settings. By Sylvester Rawling. ERDI'S “Wn Ballo in Maschera” V (‘A Masked Ball") was presented at the Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday at the first matinee of the! Wagon before a crowded! house, with hundreds turned away. The opera had it, the etrength of the east he has chosen to sing it and the splendid ef- fectiveness of the whole production. Without stirring the depths, the op contains arias and ensembles that make & brave showing, and led with the fer- vor of Mr. Toscanini, who has drilled the company to perfection, it fe not sur- prising that there was applause at every opportunity, aometimes rising to a fer- vor, acco! nied by ortes of ‘Bis!’ end “Brava!” and that there were our- tain calle a-plemty. If it were worth while, the opera and the Hbretto should be restored to the original, which laid the scene in Swe- den, but was too revolutionary for the ruler to stomach at the time Ver componed it. To transfer the acene to Boston was ridiculous. A masked ball tolerated by the Puritans! Those atern, solemn, soberly garbed, God-fearing settiors, flouting about ike Rupert's Cavaiter!
