BY THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT YALE Arrives to Take Up His Duties in Law Department of the University. NEW HAVEN, April 1.—Phree thou- sand Yale students roared a welcome to Prof. William Howard Taft when he arrived here this afternoon from New York to take up hin duties an Kent Professor of Law at Yale. Practically the entire undergraduate body, headed by a band, was maxsed at the station when the train rolled in. An Mr, Taft stepped from the train he was presented with a huge bouquet of violets by the marshals of the pa* rade. A moment later the Yale “frog chorus” cheer rang out with nine “Tatts” at the end. The former Presl- dent smiled broadly and doffed his hat to the continuous cheering of the crowd. To the tune of “Down the Field” the Procession headed for the college bulld- ings, Prof. Taft receiving a continuous ovation all the way. Arriving at Unt- versity Square, Mr. Taft was escorted te a balcony, where he made a ringing speech that was continually interrupted with cheering. Pré€. Taft sald he was gind to get back to Yale, and if he could succeed ia influencing the lives of Yale men for better government “I shall thank God for it.” In conclusion he called for cheers * for Preaident Hadley, who is recovering hig health in California, They were given with a will, Mr. Taft was cheered again and the gathering came to a close with the singing of “Bright Col- lege Years,” the assemblage standing with bared heads. He explained that he has now Grawn the ling and that all-night Heensea will in future be issued to owners of places lovated near railway, bridge and other busy terminals where constant, legitimate night traffic extete, ‘and In centres where night workers are employed in large numbers. Mayor Gaynor explained that he has no objections to the all-night resort for legitimate night workers, in which a lunch or a glass of beer can be ob- tained, or a well equipped, respectable restaurant, Where flagrant or indecent acts are not permitted as an excuse for entertainment. ‘The first license under this new or- der of things was ordered issued by the Mayor to-day to a Merald Square resort, where no show is given and no rooms are for hire, but whieh hae a reataurant annex.
